NAPIEK, September 11. The play at the golf mteting yesterday was of rn intaesting cha:acter and some excellent scores were made in the Open Championship and Hawke's Bay Amateur Championship which we-e played together. The best scores were made by D. Hood (professional), and J. Carne Bidwill, 80 each, which is only one or -two of! the record for the links. Duncan's criving anl apDveaihing were better than to 6 professional s, but Maclaren beat him at putting, and game ending in Maclaren's favour by 82 to 83. , . , T n the Amataur Championship of New Zealand, the greatest surprise was the defeat of Kurupo Tareha by Ken Duncan. In the morning Tareha did a good round in 83 to Duncan's 95, and the former was expected to make a big hid for the championship. In driving and approaching there was 'little difference between the two, but Duncan's putting was superior. It was evident Tareha was right off his form. He was up at the xifteenth hole; the next was halvfd, and Duncan won the seventeenth an i eighteenth. The New Zealand Golf Club s Championship Meeting was continued to-day. Slight rain fell in the afternoon* and this developed into fairly heavy showers. The Amateur Medal HandicaD, 18 hoies, was won by L. C. Seifert, with a net score of 80; Wi Karanexna was second with 81; A. 'A g, Wilder third with 85; and Arthur Duncan, the amateur champion, took fourth place with a net score of 86, but he did the ro"nd in 78, a very fine performance. B. B. Wood, H. C. Smith, J. F. Ritchie, Kurupo Tareha and G. Thorburn put on the next best gross score to Duncan's. The O'Rorke Vase, for teams, was won by the Wellington team with a ; link score of 353. Dunedin scored 366, Timaru 368, Napier 369, Christchurch No. 1 378, Christchurch No. 2 3SO, and Auckland 396. The second round of the Amateur Championship of New Zealand wa.° played, the f winners in the round being— J. G. Rutherford, H. D. Bamford, G. L. Thorburn, J. O. Kettle, M. E. Tuvrell. T. Lynch, A. W. Gillies, H. C. Cock, E. A. Dargaville. Major Gordon. H. B. Lusk, B. Wood, W. Handyside, J. Came Bidwill. C. Armstrong, W. B. Colteck, H. T. Gillies, A. H. Fisher, K. D. Duncan, C. Bennett, H. E. Wright, E. Knight. A. D. Duncan, H. B. Watson, W. E. Reid, H. D. Bates, W. T. Harman, J. T. Ritchie, R. W. Kirby, C. A. Turnbull, 11, C. Smith, H. E. Traitbeck. The Open Championship and Hawke's Bay Amateur Championship will be continued to-morrow. From present appearances A. Duncan. who is playing very consistently, apd is in splendid form, looks certain to win the Amateur Championship, if not the whole threes championships.
