KURIPUNI.

NAME CHANGED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. Messrs R. Rigg and D. Threadwell waited, as a deputation, on the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, and asked the Council to change the name of Kuripuni to South Mahtarton or Masterton South. A petition to this effect had been taken around, and had been signed by about seventy residents of the south end of the town. They urged that Kuripuni had always had a "bad name," and it was with the object of wiping out that stigma that the residents desired a change. It was said that the name Kuripuni had came about by custom, but they would like to point out that the Postal and Railway Departments recognised the name and it would probably be necessary to approach these Departments before any' alteration was made in the name. It was urged that the larger part of the Kuripuni was in the borough. Cr Fragnell asked where it was proposed that the boundary of the newly-named portion of the borough should begin. Mr Threadwell said this was a difficult question. The District High School was considered by some peoule to be in Kuripuni. The Mayor said the question of a boundary did not matter. It was only a "question of changing the name adopted by the Railway and Postal Departments and then the name would disappear altogether. Cr Prentice moved that the prayer of tne petitioners be given effect to. Cr Pragnell seconded the motion, which was carried unanirrously. Cr Ewington asked whether the motion also referred to the railway station. If so he would oppose it. There was no reason to change a name which had so long done service. Crs Morris and Pauling supported Cr Ewington in his objections. They doubted 'whether the Railway Department would consent to the change. The Mayor said he understood from the petition and the deputation that it .was desired to change the' name of the railway station. He moved that the Railway Department oe asked to change the name of the Kuripuni. railway station; a 'new name to be found. This was seconded by Cr Pragnell and carried by seven votes to three,

th* voting beirg—Ayes: Crs Elliott, Temple, Haughey, Pragnell, Prentice, Yarr and the Mayor. Noes: Crs Pauling, Morris and Ewington.
