UNWRITTEN LAW'S SUCCESS

The unwritten law was successfully invoked recently at Laplate, Maryland (U.S.A.), where Mrs Mary Bowie, the widow of a wealthy farmer and her son Henry were acquitted of the murder of Hubert Posey, a young relative, who broke his engagement to marry Priscilla Bowie, the village belle. The girl, with an infant in her -arms, told the jury how her cousin .had deserted her on the eve of the wedding. The mother admitted that she shot Posey in a lonely road after he refused to make Pr!scilla his wife. Posey attempted to flee with a pistol .shot in hi? shoulder, and then Henry came to the aid of the mother. "It was I," he told the jury, "who killed Posey." Counsel for the defence contended that the shooting was absolutely justified. "There is no written law," he said, "to meet such a case." The jury took only five minutes to give their verdict for mother and son.
