COPPER MINING AT WOODVILLE.
PROSPECTS. j Mr Shepherd, Manager of the -Maharahara Copper Mines, Ltd., has submitted a report for last week's work to his directors. It is gratifying to note that the indications are most satisfactory. The report is as follows: — Woodville, Aug. 31st, 1907. The drive on the course of the No. 1 Lode at the Low Level was connected with the old drive on Thursday morning. The new drive is six feet below the floor of the old one. The main portion of the lode has been cross-cut for 6ft. The lode is a strong body of ore carrying a good percentage of coppor in the form of chalcopyrite which occurs in veins and bunches well distributed through the lode. From the ore broken out we have selected about 2cwt of picked ore. and about 3 tons. of good general ore, which I will sample and assay early next week. H. FRANK SHEPHERD, Manager Maharahara Copp;r Mines, Ltd.
NAPIER COPPER PROSPECTING SYNDICATE. We are pleased to know that the above syndicate are proceeding to make a thorough test of their claims at Maharahara. Arrangements have been made with Mr W. H. Hughes to cut tracks into different portions of the claims, and that gentleman proceeds with the work this week. He will also assist with the surface prosDecting. As soon as the lodes are located a tannel will be started. It is thought the will be quickly located, as the block of ground adjoins the Miaharahara mine. As the ground rises to a height of fully 1000 ft, no sinking operations will be required for some considerable time. So far the surface operations indicate promising results. The claims are owned by a number of Maharahara settlers and residents of Napier and Auckland. Mr Claude Cato, of Napier, is secretary. One of the owners proceeds to Auckland shortly to procure the necessary mining tools, etc. Mr G. J. Goldfinch, one of the original discoverers of copper in the Maharahara mine, will have charge of the operations for the new syndicate, and Mr F. Shepherd will likely be offered the position of consulting engineer. All we hope for now is that the company will the best of good luck.—Woodviile Examiner.
