WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

(From Our Carterton Correspondent.)

The following is the Engineer's report presented at the Wairarapa South County Council meeting, held on Saturday last: — Belvedere Riding.— In the Mangaterere Valley Road the old wooden culverts at Scandy Clearing have been replaced by pipes, and the bad places on the road have been patched. Part of the decking on the Mangatarere Bridge have been renewed, and general repairs effected on the road from the bridge to Chester Road. The drains on .Cobden Road have been cleared out and slips on Hinau Gully Road removed. The bridge over the Mangatarere on Brooklyn Road has been protected by further sheathing the piles and filling with netted boulders. The willows ou Brooklyn Road and at the Hinaki Creek Bridge on Manning's Road have been cut down. Minor repairs have been done on the Main Road North and on Brooklyn and Belvedere Roads. Parkvale Riding.—A track has be»n formed on Hughes' Road from Cornwall Road to the river. The scrub on Hughes' Road has been cut down, and I would suggest that as opportunity offers the scrub on East Taratahi and other roads in the district be cleared away. The cutting at Dakin's, at the "Cliffs," has been cleared and patched. Old wooden "culverts on Cornwall Road have been replaced by pipes. The big slip in the Kokatau Cutting has been removed, but the recent rains have again brought down a considerable amount of clay. The road from the cutting to the river is worn very badly where the metal was washed off, and as soon as the stop bank is finished thi3 road should be remetalled. General repairs have been effected to Woodland's Road, Carter's Road and France's Road. The Main East Coast Road from the Maori Cutting to the Gladstone Bridge is badly worn, and needs re-metalling. Dalefield Riding.—The foot bridges over the Kaipatangata, on Victoria Road, have been completed, and logs which were tending to turn the water in this stream have been removed. The weight limit has been painted on the Taumata Bridge. Willows have been planted in the eastern bank here, and arrangements made with Mr Oates to have the bank fenced. Part of the stone work under the Waiohine Bridge has been repaired. Minor repairs have been effected on Dalefield, Waibakeke and Moreton Roads. The large culvert on the Main Road near the Waiohine Bridge should, 1 consider, be taken up and replaced either by a culvert with concrete sides and floor, or by a wooden culvert carried on piles. To repair the culvert in its present form would cost £2l lis, or with flooring £3l 15s. Maungaraki Riding.—During the month a considerable amount of patching has been done on the Maungaraki Road near KorerauCreek. The continued wet weather and traction engine traffic has had a very had effect on this road, which will require further considerable patching or re-metalling. General repairs have been carried out on the Main Gladstone - East Coast Road, and on the Flat Point Road Men are engaged at present expending the "thirds" that have accrued on the Craigie Lea Road. The Admiial Road is in a bad state and men are now employed cleaning the water tables, and filling up ruts. The clay portions of the Longbush Road is also in a bad state and temporary side tracks have had to be formed in two of the worse places. On the GladstoneLongbush Road, at Mr Strang's property, the course of the creek has been straightened and cleared of willows, which will be a great advantage in saving the road in flood times. I would suggest that the Council subsidise Mr Strang for the work done here to the extent of £s.' The slips have been cleared, and water tables cleaned on Miller's Road. During the month I have surveyed tho section taken by the Council for gravel pit at Wainui-o-ru, and the section for a roadman's whare at the same place. I have pegged a deviation of 43 chains on the Admiral Road through the properties of Messrs Beetham and Grace Bros. To form this portion with the necessary culverts, etc., should cost £33 10s; which amount would be reduced if the persons interested lend their teams for grader work as previously promised. At | Tupurupuru I have re-pegged the j portion of the road from the Taueru ! j Terrace to the proposed bridge over the Korerau Creek when this portion of the road, thirty chains, is formed, and the bridge erected it will be possible to cart through by the new road. The road formation will cost £6O, and to erect a bridge in totara j over the creek £259. i
