TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). THE MAKTON MEETING

The Marton Meeting, which will open tc-day, is one of the first of the colony's early spring gatherings. Taking form as a guide, it is difficult to select winners there inasmuch as the fields include a ntimber of contestants which havp not been raced during the winter months as well as a full complement of horses that have not previously exhibited their best form. The meeting under notice generally brings out a fair ratio of performers which make a name for themselves later on in their racing ■ careers, consequently a widespread interest is often manifested in the Marton fixture. The following are suggested as likely to run forward m their engagements to-day Maiden—Speciosa and Signor. Shorts Handicap—Gawain and St. Claimer. » Crofton Handicap—St. Joe , and Lyrist. Hurdles— Waipu and Waitoa. Trial Hurdles—Compass and Dulcinea. Hunt Club Cup—Tilson and Tattoo. Flying Handicap—Wakaraka and Frisco. Welter—Rendrock and Lady Beresford. T. C. White, of Tauherenikau, intends to leave for Blenheim to take up training operations this month. He will take with him La Torpedo and Whatakura. The latter will be tried at hurdle racing during the season. . Tattoo has been an inmate of W. Garrett's stable since the Wairarapa Hunt Club meeting. The Flinders gelding will compete in the.Hunt Cup at the Marton Meeting to-day. Hikatoa, by Strath-braan—Blue Bell, who ran second in the Hack Race at Amberley last week—his supporters being rewarded with a dividend of £22 18s—was bred in this district, and was sold early in the year to a North Canterbury resident. Like the Strath-braans generally, he can gallop fast, and may race to advantage during the season. The ploughed gallop at Opaki was put into order last week, and with a spell of fine weather will soon be in ' fine order. About thirty horses are at work on tne tracks, but the number should be increased to forty by the end of the month. Among the workers are the New Zealand Cup candidates Mahuta and Aberration. Both are doing well, but as yet have only been given slow work. Lady Flintlock, by Flintlock—Lady Agnes, who ran very creditably at the Wairarapa Hunt Club Meeting, has been sent down from Tinui to be i put into work at Opaki. Several Wairarapa horses will compete at the Horowhenua meeting next week. R. Knox has Platypup, Royal Blue, Merrie Rose, Lucretius, Gaelic and a full brother to Full Rate in work at present. He also has a half sister to Curenagh, a sister to Lucretius, and a mare by Daunt Kestrel. St. Brandon is in work again and appears to be much sounder than lie was when thrown out of work. With, due care he may be brought to the post fit enough to score victories.
