THE BOROUGH STAFF.

CRITICISM BY CR YARR. M the meeting of the Mastertoan Bocough Council, last evening, Cr Yarr moved "that a special meeting of tahe Council be held to consider the reorganisation ofvthe Borough staff." Speaking in support of the motion, the aiover said it.opened up a large question, but it vwas one that the Couacil would hawe to face. Large sums iof money had recently , beeia spent in the borough, large sums were now being spent, and further sums were likely to be spent, and he was relluctantly enforced to the opinion tiaat the ratepayers were not getting the best value for their money. The town was now heavily saddled with loans, and it behoved the Couacil to see that the ratepayers were getting the best value for their money. He went on (to name a nura • uer of new streets in the borough which he contended load not been properly snade, and which, he considered, oa account of faulty work, would soon 2ae the source of more expenditure. Another thieg thafc he objected to was that too jnuch work was referred to the Council!. "Every little twopeniJ3 T -halfpenny job comes before the Council," said Cr Yarr. The Council, he .considered, eould get along well with a. monthly meeting for all the work there was to be done. Another matter that he objected to was that it was sometimes a very hard thing for a Councillor to get information on borough affairs. He did not see why a Councillor should have trouble in obtaining information; everything should be before the Council in "black and white."

Cr Prentice said it seemed to him that Cr Yarr wished to know something or had something to "let out," and for that reason he would second the motion.

The motion was then put to the meeting and carried, on a division, by seven votes to three, the voting being as follows: — Ayes: Crs Pauling, Temple, Haughey, Pragnell, Prentice, Yarr and the Mayor. .Noes: Crs Elliott, Ewington, ard Morris. The speciaS meeting to consider the motion will be held on Tuesday evening next.
