By Telegraph—Press Association Received September 2, 8.43 a.m. LONDON. September 1. New Zealand hemp—Market steady and quiet. Good to fair August to December £32. The following are Frozen Meat Trade Association's Smithfielfi market quotations for the undermentioned classes of frozen meat based on actual sales of not less than 100 carcases of mutton or lamb or 25 carcases of beef of fair average quality. These quotations are not f° r selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on the market:—Frozen lamb—Canterbury heavy, 361b to 421b, 4gd; heavy River Plate sheep, 3£d; rest unchanged. The rabbit market is gradually improving, but unexpectedly large shipments are surprising the market after the statements about shortage. Quotations are: —Sydney large, 12s to 12s 6d; young, 10s 6d. There is a great shortage of hares. First grade are quoted at 2s 6d and second at 2s Practically all have been bought for France and Germany. Wheat cargoes sold at 37s to 375. 3d.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Cpmmerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner; dated London, August 31st: — The mutton market is slightlyweaker, with less demand, and stocks on'hand are heavy. Prime Canterbury is, however, scarce, and is quoted at 4§d per lb, second-class quality is quoted at 3fd, and North Island mutton at 3|d per lb. River Plate mutton is in strong supply, ai d is being strongly pushed for sale at 3Jd per lb. v ' The lamb market is firm. Fine weather has set in, and there is a general and active demand, with. moderate stocks in hand. Canterbury lamb is quoted at sfd, and other than Canterbury at 5Jd per lb. The beef market is quiet, and supplies are increasing . Hindquarters are quoted at 3gd, and forequarters at 2£d per lb. The butter .market is firm for best quality, the supply falling .short of demand, and prospects are favourable. The nominal quotation for choicest New Zealand is 106s; Danish, 1.10s; Siberian, 965; Canadian, 105s per cwt. The cheese market is quiet, but holders are firm. It will be an agreeable surprise if prices do not decline. Home make is very large. NewZealand white is quoted at 60s, and coloured at 61s per cwt; Canadian white, 575, coloured 58s. The hemp market is dull, and very little business is doing. The current quotations are:—Good fair Wellington £32 10s, fair grade £29, both on spot. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, with light stocks on hand. Bright clean New Zealand seed, 171b per bushel, is quoted at 60s. New Zealand wheat on spot, per quarter of 496 lb, is quoted at 36s 6d; New Zealand short-berried wheat in same position, per quarter of 4961b, 35s 6d. The market is firm, with improved demand. New Zealand oats, short (sparrowbills), ex-granary on spot, per quarter of 3841b, are quoted at 265; New Zeaiand oats (Danish) in same position per quarter of 3201b, 21s 9d. Demand for oats on . u pot is good, and the same remark applies to parcels to arrive. New Zealand beans, f.a.q. .(new crop), per 5041b, 3ls 6d. Market is firm, with hardening tendency. Partridge peas- are quoted at 445. Market quiet but firm.
