PROFESSIONALISM IN SPORT.

By Telegraph —Press Association. CHKISTCHUKCH, August 31. At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council, last night, it was reported that 10s in the £1 had been refunded to the guarantors and affiliated associations in connection with the M.C.C. team's tour. There was also a balance of .€365 in hand which would bring the amount to 13s 6d in the£J. it was decided to take £7O from the ordinary account and pay the council's guarantors which would reduce the liabilty to the guarantors by another 3s in the£l. 'At the same meeting a circular letter was received from the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on the subject of the elimination by legislation of the professional element in sport. The matter was discussed at length and the general opinion was expressed that it would be extremely undesirable to have the control of sport vested entirely in amateur bodies. Delegates were appointed to attend the forthcoming conference to be held in Wellington to consider the matter, with instructions to support the proposals which would enable amateurs and professionals to meet together. It was thought that the proposals of the N.Z.A.A.A., if given effect to, would prevent the New Zealand cricketers playing against Australian and English teams, which always included a certain number of professionals.
