THE DUTIES ON FOOD AND THE NECESSARIES OF LIFE. Received August 29, 10.15 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 29. During the tariff debate, Mr Hughes stated that he would vote to alter all the duties on food and the necessaries of life. The Canadian representative asked Sir William Lyneto suspend the new tariff for three months, as far as Canada was concerned, but Sir William refused. A WESTERN AUSTRALIAN PROTEST. Received August 29, 8.10 a.m. PERTH, August 29. A public meeting passed a protest against the tariff, and asked all ■ Federal members of the State to resign. '.'WIRE NETTING INCIDENT." Received August 29, 9.27 p.m. SYDNEY, August 29. The latest incident in connection With the "wire netting incident" is that the Federal Government has issued a writ against the firm of ! carters who removed the wire from the Customs control, while'the New South Wales Government has issued writs against the Commonwealth, one in the High Court claiming a refund of the duty paid in 1902 and another in the Supreme Court for duty paid in June last.
