NEW ZEALAND'S CLIMATE.
x SOME ERRONEOUS IMPRESSIONS. (Post Correspondent.)
AUCKLAND. August 28. From a statement made by Dr. Purdv, District Health Officer, to a Herald reporter yesterday, it would appear that some erroneous ideas prevail in the Old Country as to New Zealand's climate and that people prior to coming out here sell their overcoats on the understanding that this is a land of eternal sunshine. "During the short time I have been in Auckland," said the doctor, "I have come across no less than three cases of men who were recommended to come out co New Zealand owing to incipient signs of phthisis, and they took steps to*obtain a passage to the colony as assisted emigrants. There are some very erroneous ideas as to the climatic conditions of New Zeaby even some of the recognised authorities on climate and health resorts. In the Old Country, three years ago, I consulted standard works oh climate and health resorts at the Royal College of Surgeons' Library, and I was amused at many of the statements which the books contained. As recently as last Saturday I was informed by a young man who had been sent out to the colony suffering from phthisis, that he was under the impression that New Zealand had a dry climate and owing to that his brother, who accompanied him, sold his overcoat before leaving Blackpool, England. The climate of New Zealand," continued the doctor, "is one of the most healthy in the world, but it has its limitations. It is no good for phthisis. The fact that New Zealand ljas for many years held the proud record of having the lowest death rate in the world has, no doubt, induced many persons to believe that all invalids will find a paradise in.the colony. With the exception of most lui:g diseases, no doubt. New Zealand offers great advantages to those afflicted with different diseases."
