In the House of Commons, Mr Harold Cox, Liberal member for Preston, in mentioning the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce .representations regarding the Australian tariff, asked whether Sir H. bell-Bannerman would consider the advisability of at the earliest possible opportunity relieving the.taxpayers of the expense of the squadron maintained for the defence of AusSir' H. Campbell-Bannerman replied in the negative, declaring that an entirely different set of cirsum-, stances were involved in regard to the maintenance t of the Naval Agreements. 1 Received August 29, 12.50 a.m. LONDON, August 28. Mr Lloyd-George, President ot the Board of Trade, announced that he had invited the Coventry Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Australian tariff with the Board of TradeSteps would be taken to inform the Commonwealth of the British traders views in reference to the new tariff. Received August 29, 1.4 a.m. . PERTH, August 28. The Assembly adopted a resolution protesting against the Federal tariff by 25 votes to 6. The Labour party formed the minority. "MISCHIEVOUS AND VALUELESS." Received August 28, 9.27 a.m. LONDON, August 27. Many individual exporters contend that Sir William Lyne's offer of preference is mischievous and valueless. Others prefer to await details.
