THE NEW ZEALAND CUP.
The weights for the New Zealand Cup made their appearance nearly a week before the due date, consequently sportsmen throughout the colony are enabled to study the apportionments earlier than they expected to be in a position to do so. The defection of Achilles caused the handicapper to start on a lower scale than usual, and he leads off with Maniapoto, 9st. The Soult horse is being prepared for the big event by a thoroughly capable trainer at Wanganui. Were he the Maniapoto of two years ago the majority of racing men would consider it needless to look any further foi the winner, but when he returned from Auitralia he was somewhat unsound and this being so there is at least a doubt as to whether he will stand a severe preparation. ' Master Delaval, Bst 91b, has been backed for the Melbourne Cup to win £IO,OOO, sowill.be looked upon as a non-starter for the race under notice. Marguerite, Bstj 71b, is especially well treated. Taking into consideration her running oyer distances last season, the Stepniak mare is a very likely one to see-the two miles out. She belongs to a strong stable, and if specially prepared, is sure to be solidly supported. Paritutu, Bst 31b, is about in his right place, but he has been strung up for so long that the chances are he may be overdone before Cup day comes round. Armistice, at the same weight, is an but and out stayer, and if she strips well on the day may be relied upon to run a sterling race. Zimmerman, also on the same mark, may stay better than he did last year, qtherwise his chance cannot be highly assessed. Sir Tristram Bst lib, Oxton 7st, and Hippolytus 6st 81b, are also members of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's string, and the elect of the stable' will have to be reckoned with on the eventful day. Truce, 7st 121b, is a proved stayer, and has received fair treatment at the hands of the handicapper. Another stayer is Grand Slam, 7st 111b, and Seal Rock, by winning the Great Autumn Handicap of one mile and a half, showed that he could gallop over a distance. Mahuta, 7st 111b, has not been treated too leniently. Ido not mean to infer that he is overweighted, bu*; he is probably too near such as Marguerite, Zimmerman and Truce, who have scored in good style over longer distances. The same remarks apply to Fireiron, who should not be asked to give seven pounds to a performer like Buccleuch. Harvest 7st 101b, Aeolus, Auratus and Boniform 7st 91b, are nicely treated, as also are J Crichton and Apa, 7st 81b, Glenullin and Seaman 7st 61b, and Mystification 7st 51b. Next comes Elevation 7st 41b, and this colt is certainly one of the picks of the handicap. He ran his races last year in such good style, and finished like a stayer, that he must have a really good chance of , winning. A good three-year-old is always dangerous in the New Zealand Cup, and if this son of San Francisco j is specially prepared he must take a , lot of beating. Starina, who comes from the same stable as last year's , winner, Star Rose, has been awarded . 7st 21b. But for this fact he would have bep" .!,"---'- ""O lb division. calls for special mention, but perhaps j the best treated are Downfall, by [ San Francisco, 6st 131b, and Somateria 6st 71b. Three of the/ Wairarapa entrants are among thU lower division —Aberration and Mojoch 6st 91b and Culmination 6st Tjlb. If asked to select a likely half-aozen at. present, 1 would name Elefvation, Marguerite, Armistice, Trucl, Seal Rock, and Apa. |
