VALEDICTORY.

FAREWELL SOCIAL TO EXSERGEANT O'MALLEY AND FAMILY. The friends of ex-Sergeant O'Mal ley, who will leave Masterton to take up his residence in Chrlstchurch early next month, entertained him and his family at a farewell social in the Foresters' Hall, last evening. There were about seventy couples present, and the evening was spent in a very enjoyable manner. Those who did not indulge in dancing passed the evening in card-playing, a number of tables being placed in the supper room for that purpose. The supper was prepared by a large and energetic ladies' committee, to whom the success of the gathering must in a large measure be attributed. The music was supplied by Mr W. Chunn, extras being played by Messrs F. McKenzie, H. Cole and R H. McEwen. The duties of M's.C. were carried out by Messrs J. A. McEwen, J. C. McKillop and F. Dupre. At an interval in [the proceedings, Mi- B. J. Dolan, in a neat speech, said he had been asked by the Ladies' Committee to make presentations on their behalf to Mrs and Miss O'Malley. He explained that exSergeant O'Malley had already received a tribute from the citizens of Masterton as a mark of the esteem in which he was held, and Mrs and Miss O'Malley had been omitted from that gathering, although reference <va 5 made to their many good quali;ies as helpmates of the retired sergeant. Mrs O'Malley had proved :er3elf a worthy helpmate to "a vorthy and esteemed sergeant. He ;hen presented each of the ladies vith a handsome gold brooch set with precious stones. Ex-Sergeant O'Malley briefly re- ' :urned thanks on behalf of Mrs and Hiss O'Malley.
