UNITED STATES TREASURY • DEPOSITS. Received August 27, 8.38 a.m. NEW YORK, August 26. Mr Cortelyon, Secretary to the United States Treasury, for at least the next five weeks will make deposits in the national banks upon approved security, the deposits to be returnable, if required, by the beginning of January. This action is being taken to prevent a panic in the autumn. The Comptroller of Currency at at Washington considers the plan wise and timely. LABOUR MATTERS. Received August 27, 7.42 a.m. LONDON, August 26. The Standard states that Mr Barnes, Labour M.P., interviewed, declared that the Amalgamated Society of Engineers had decided to terminate its affiliation with the Trade Union Congress. The Society has joined the Labour Party and the Federation of Trades. (The Trade Union Congress is composed of representatives of trade unions, either working at their trade or paid union officials. Unions may send one delegate for every 2,000 members or fraction thereof. Voting on important questions is on the principle of one vote for every thousand members represented. A Parliamentary Committee of twelve, belonging to different unions, is elected to look after the interests of the working classes in Parliamentary matters and elsewhere.) THE PEACE OF THE WORLD.
