THAT EXCHANGE QUESTION.
vTo the Editor.) Sir,— Kindly allow me room to ventilate that proposed little transaction in the matter of Courthouse site exchange of land. Two things strike one forcibly, first, that the Minister of Justice should be ready to connive at an utterly illegal act and endeavour to get an agreement which has been made by Parliament, and ratified by the people of Masterton, broken and set aside; second, that increasing the number of Trustees of the Town Lands Trust does not seem to be yet the tuccesi that many hoped for, but perhaps it was too much to expect the new men to be able to grasp the situation right from the jump. Fortunately the old members stood firm, and the tittle transaction has not come off. Leaving aside the moral and legal aspect of the question, what will the people think of a proposal to pay the Department five pounds mora than the difference in value of the two pieces of land?— accordirg to the Government valuation ! It is to be hoped that nothing more will be heard of the matter, as it is one that will not stand investigation. -■■ I am, etc., R.B.
