CARTERTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Friday. Delegates from the local bodies in South Wairarapa appointed to consider the question of travelling facilities between Featherston and New Plymouth, met on the Showgrounds at 10 a.m. to-day. The meeting was a representative one. Correspondence was read from Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, Member for the District, stating that Sir Joseph Ward had written to him to the effect that it is impossible to grant the request of the committee as to connecting the trains, but that he would assist the committee with the object in view by every means in his power. It was resolved that the local bodies representative of the settlers of South Wairarapa should wait upon the Minister for Railways after the present session had closed, and renew the committee's request to connect the trains in a way which the Department should think fit. It was understood that the present time for waiting on the Minister was inopportune, owing to the pressure of business. It was decided that the P. and A. Society should cali the next meeting. A very enjoyable social anu dance promoted by the milk suppliers of Dalefield was held in the Dalefield Town Hall last night. There was a large attendance. A number of musical items were rendered by local singers, and visitors. Dancing was indulged in till a late hour. The 'music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Berrill (piano) and Mr R. Crawley (cornet). At the Victoria Hall, last evening, the Rev. W. J. Elliott delivered a lecture on "Irish Life and Character." In the absence of Mr W. Moore (Mayor), Mr J. Caliister occupied the chair. Irish songs were contributed by Miss May o'Donovan (3) and Mrs Hughes. At the con elusion of his address, Mr Elliott recited in a capable manner Thomas Bracken's "Not Understood." Mr Elliott was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address. A vote of thanks was passed to those who contributed musical items.
