Received August 23, 10.16 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 23. A deputation of timber merchants asked the Minister for Customs to give increased protection to Australian timbers. The admission was made that Queensland timber was not so suitable as New Zealand pine for butter boxes. A suggestion was made that reciprocity should be arranged with New Zealand, so that pine could be admitted free in return for Australian hard wood being placed upon the New Zealand free list. Another deputation asked for con- ] cessions in connection with the boot and leather industries. Mr Bailey, • of Sydney, hoped the duty in skivers ; would be retained. If this were done ' his firm would remove the plant at present in New Zealand to Australia, and start manufacturing skivers. Mr Chapman promised to consider the points raised. W. P. CRICK. At the Kawatiri enquiry Captain ' Crawford deposed that he thought that with the prevaling wind the bar would be smooth, but it proved to be very rough. It was then too late to turn back, and the only safety lay in going full steam ahead. Previously j he had gone in in rougher water. Other captains, the pilot, and the harbour master were of opinion that the water at the time of the wreck ( was not too rough to prevent Captain j | Crawford bringing the Kawatiri in. j s i!
