CARTERTON.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Wednesday. The fortnightly meeting of the local Methodist Band of Hope was held in the schoolroom, last evening, there being a moderate attendance of members. The Rev. W..J. Elliott presided. Songs and recitations were contributed by the members, and a humourous dialogue entitled "Theophilus Snipe Advertises" was staged. The following took part in the dialogue:— Theophilus Snipe, Mr R. Tucker; James, butler to Mr Snipe, Master A. Martin; Matilda Manly, Miss G. Fensham; Michael Flaherty, Mr H. Andrews; Tim Trotter, Mr W. Stevens; Grace Partridge, Miss R. Fensham. To mark Mr W. B. Allen's sixtieth birthday a social and dance was held in the Clareville Hall, last evening, and in spite of the.inclement weather there was a large number of old settlers and others present. On behalf of the settlers of Clareville, Mr W. C. Buchanan, in a neat speech, presented Mr and Mrs Allen with a silver tea set and tray. Mr Allen briefly acknowledged the gift. Messrs Allen and C. Reid very capably carried out the duties of M's.C. The music was supplied by Mr H. Heap. A pinafore social, promoted by the pupils of Mr W. Bannin's dancing class, was held in Victoria Hall last evening. The pinafores worn by the ladies were very pretty. The musicians were Miss Connie Berrill (piano) and Mr R. Crawley (cornet). Songs were contributed by Messrs Warner and Watson and Mrs Hughes. Extras were played by a number of ladies, and the duties of M's.C. were" carried out by Messrs W. Bannin and W. Campbell.
