.A RUSE THAT FAILED. sßeceived August 20, 8.34 a.m. MOROCCO, August 19. Fictitious Moorish mendicants approached a French encampment at Casablanca and attempted to seize :arms and ammunition. Sixteen were killed, and besides this one was compelled to dig his own grave for refusing to answer questions.

.A SHARP ATTACK. TRIBESMEN REPULSED BY THE FRENCH. Received August 20, 10.46 p.m. MOROCCO. August 20. Five thousand Kabyle horsemen sharply attacked the French troops commanded by General Drude, on Sunday, from 7 o'clock in ihe morning until 11 o'clock, when they were repulsed. The tribesmen displayed remarkable courage, charging to wit hie three ihundred yards of the French infantry. They also engaged the Algerian scavalry, and hnd hand to hand encounters with sabres. The French finally outflanked She Moors, who retreated. Two Frenchmen were killed and three wounded. The Gloire, from the bay, effectively shelled the tribesmen, who lost one hundred men. The Sultan is willing to guarantee the life and property of foreign residents at Fez if the French troops confine their operations to the immediate neighbourhood of Casablanca. Received August 20, 10.43 p.m. PARIS, August 20. General Drude telegraphs that the attack was extremely serious.
