The influenza wa-\e which rolled over Wellington early in the winter, and made depredations in many other places, has not yet broken. Timaru is at present being overwhelmed. No fewer than 50 per cent, of the children in the principal elementary -school in the town were absent owing to influenza last week, a serious matter in view of the nearness of the annual examinations. The Bill introduced by Mr Flatman to make provision for the accommodation of farm labourers cannot seriously be opposed by the farmers of the dominion, says the Farmers' Union Advocate. There are few instances in which the farm labourer is not thoroughly well housed. The great difficulty is iu inducing him to observe acts of cleanliness. If Mr Flatman's Bill, whilst meeting exceptional cases of default on the part of employers, were to impose responsibilities as to sanitation upon the labourer, it would be serving a good purpose. It is obvious that one result of the passing of the measure will be to stamp out the "sundowner." Farmers have been in the habit of allowing these gentry to spend a night in the men's quarters, but as Mr Flatman's Bill provides a certain air space for each man, the "sundowner" will either have to sleep in the open, or get off the roads.
