THE NEW TARIFF.
AN AUCKLAND PRONOUNCEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. j AUCKLAND, August 18. The Auckland West branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation has forwarded to the Government a communication on the subject of the new tariff. The branch expresses the opinion that any alteration of the tariff should be in the direction of lessening the burden of taxation upon the poorer-paid worker, removing anomalies, and giving reasonable protection to local industries. "This we take to be the essence of Liberalism," they say; "and unless it is given effect to. the present Government will undoubtedly forfeit in a considerable measure its claims to the support ot the people. We desire to compliment the Government upon the remission of many of the duties that they have pressed very hard upon the workers of the colony, and were it not that the increases in the tariff will hit the worker very hard indeed they would be a matter for sincere congratulation. We are greatly disappointed that the duty on potatoes is still retained, as that presses very hard upon the workers, is of no practical benefit to the farmers of the colony, and in our opinion should be rendered inoperative when the price has reached £4 per ton. We most strongly protest against any increase in duties upon sewing machines, lawn mowers, machine oils, hosiery, brushware. drugs, candles, printing paper, and patent medicines. The increases on these duties will very much discount remissions upon other articles. The amazing increases in the duty upon boots and shoes, if agreed to, will be most oppressive to the poorer portion of the community."
