A NECESSARY WORK.

For years past the Government has been urged to piovide proper and safe accommodation for the collection of exhibits which are stored in the old Colonial Museum building; It was pointed out that the building is liable at almost any moment to be destroyed by fire, in which event treasures which could nob be replaced would perish also, and that, apart from that consideration, the "Museum" was entirely inadequate for the purpose. In the House of Representatives, last week, however, the Premier made a satisfactory announcement on the subject. During the discussion on the Estimates, Mr Fisher remarked as the Government had taken no steps to erect a new museum he would ask the Government to hand over the contents, except the Maori exhibits, to the City Council, which already had a museum at Newtown which bade fair to rival the Colonial collections. The Premier stated, in reply, that tenders were now being called for .the erection of a new museum in brick. General satisfaction was expressed at the announcement. The Minister for Education added the information that the new building would provide accommodation for the Maori exhibits as well as for the general exhibits and a valuable collection of minerals.
