COMMONWEALTH TARIFF.
.LONDON, August 16. The Daily Mail has :rcmde enquiries as *:o the probable effect of Australia's new tariff on British exports. The Premser Cycle Company replied that it had ateeady received cablegrams cancelling large orders. Messrs C. and S. Morton said they ?, had received similar cables cancelling orders fer .olive and castor oils. Marshall and Sos's Company, Gainsborough, replied ithat should the tariff be maintained, colonial industries would doubtless be built up in time. "We shall™ ithey added, "»nd it difficult to compete on the old lines." Ramsomes, Sons and .Jeffries, Ipswich, dedared that the anorease in the tariff would very prejudicially affect the trade. IChe Birmingham Chamber-.of _Commsi'ee. in a memorial to Lord Elgin, set .Slit the injustice, harda&ip and enormous losses which would be inflicted on British exporters by the Commas wealth tariff into operatic'? without notice. The Chamber requested Lord Elgin to ask the Commonwealth to postpone the operation of £bs tariff for three months. Received August 18, 4.42 p.m. OTTAWA, August 17. The Canadian Manufacturers' Association has petitioned the Go vernment to secure preference from Australia as regards fish, paper, lumber and agricultural implements, and to secure the suspension of the high protective tariff pending the arrival of goods in transit to Australia.
