CARTERTON.
_» (From Our Cv; : Correspondent.) Friday. The death is announced of Mrs Rains, which occurred at Wellington after a very brief illness. Mr Rains, tailor, of this town, is a son, and Mrs McPartland, of Dalefield, is a daughter of the deceased lady. This morning the weather conditions took a change for the better, and indications point to a spell of sunshine. An appropriation by ballot in connection with the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society took place in the Council Chambers, last evening, before a very fair number of shareholders. The number d'-awn by Master Berrill was in favour of Miss Jupp, of this town, and entitled her to a loan of £3OO free of interest. The firebell was placed in the tower of the new Fire Brigade Station, to-day, and will probably be rung for the first time on Saturday morning. At a special meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, held last evening, a set of by-laws was adopted and water-race by-laws were drawn up by a committee from the Council. There is a movement on foot to form a Railway League to work in the interests of the South Wairarapa townships.
