WAIRARAPA HUNT CLUB MEETING.

(By Zetland). , The second annual meeting of the Wairarapa Hunt Club was held at the < Clareville course, yesterday. The attendance was large considering the unpropitious state of the weather, setting in early in the afternoon -and continuing throughout. A number of bookmakers were present, and •did good business. Only short odds, however, were on offer, otherwise the volume of business would have been considerably larger. The racing was decidedly interesting, and the general arrangements connected with the meeting were carried out in a most satisfactory manner. In the absence of Mr Hugh Morison, of Greytown, Mr W. D. Watson carried out the duties of judge, and his decisions were given with promptness. The secretarial work was executed by Mr Norman H. James most capably. The programme opened with the Hunters' Hurdles, for which seven faced the starter. Waitoa was made favourite, and galloping and jumping in most approved style, won some- •■ hat easily from Oryx, who put in a i. Ie run from the distance. Tilson, who was kept rather far from the , leaders throughout, finished close up third. A nice conditioned of eight went out to contest the Handicap Ffat Race, of five furlongs. Lady Lethe and Secretary carried on the running to the home turn, where Narrow Escape raced to the front, and easily holding his own, won by two lengths. Then came the Hunt Steeplechase, of two and a half miles, with six contestants. Passing the stand the first time, Star Gazer and Tui were in front, but at the double they ran off, and Dick Turpin took command. He fas deposed by Tatoo at the far bend, and the latter held pride of place to the finish. Nine hacks were saddled up for the sc--. jn furlongs Hack Flat, for which the Merrie England filly, Lucretius, was well backed. When it came to racing, Narrow Escape had the field well beaten, and won 'by three lengths from Lucrietus, with Lebeccio third. A protest against the winner for running insid-j a flag was not upheld. Only three went out to do battle in the Taratahi Steeplechase, of three miles, Tilson being the popular fancy. Kuranui, ridden by Mr Harold Welch, led for half a mile, but rrui off at the double. On being brought back he galloped over two furlongs before being stopped, and by this time Tilson and Bones had a lead of half a mile. On being set going Kuranui made up considerable lee-way, but fell while negotiating an obstacle at the other side of the course. He was quickly remounted and from this out galloped and, jump sd in good style. Both Bones and Tilson gave good exhibitions of ♦jumping. The latter was ridden a fine race by Mr Tui Tilson, and won with something in hand by a length and a half. The Ladies' Bracelet brought out a field of six, including the veteran Ruamahanga, who was made favourite. The Voltigeur gelding showed that he had lost all his dash, and ran last all the way. Firestick carried on mos£ of the running, and in a good finish was beaten half a length by Clovial, a quality looking mare by Tasman, ridden by W. Buckeridge.
