SUPPOSED SUICIDE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 15. What appears to be a case of suicide occurred this morning in Merlin Boarding-house, in Hobson Street. A remittance man, John Cockburn Owen Bassett, about 40 years of age, was discovered dead in bed. Standing on a table beside him was a glass, the contents of which are supposed to be a mixture containing cyanide of potassium. A bottle containing a quantity of the same mixture was, also, found in the room, while on the floor was a wrapper with the word "poison" upon it. Bassett was last seen alive between two and three o'clock yesterday afternoon, when he was seen going into his bedroom.
