CRIME IN WELLINGTON.
COMMENTS BY MR JUSTICE COOPER.
The criminal sessions of the Wellington Supreme Court opened, yesterday, before His Honour, Mr Justice Cooper, who, concluding his address to the Grand Jury, remarkeel that the calendar ranged over a great number of cases —from incest down to gambling—and they were brought against a great number of men. He was afraid that the jury would be detained for a considerable time in investigating them. The calendar showed no decrease of crime, he regretted to say, and it might be due to various causes. He thought, however, he might say this, that the City of Wellington did not present so much'crime to the superior courts as some other districts of the colony. Perhaps that would be some solatium, but if the calendar increased as it had done from session to session lately, Wellington would by-and-bye obtain a somewhat unenviable reputation as a city.
