MANGAMAHOE.
(From a Correspondent.)
Despite the inclement weather, the plain and fancy dress ball, held here on Friday night was very largely attended. A very energetic men's working bee had been hard at work far two or three days previous clearing and fencing round the river bank, making the approaches, and last but not least, decorating the hall for the occasion. The ti-palms largely used in conjunction with the nikau and tree-fern and branches of red holly and a large New Zealand flag provided just the necessary touches of colour. The hall was brilliantly lighted. The music was provided by a first-class string band, and the floor was excellent; so everything conduced to the enjoyment of the dancers present. The chairman of the hall trustees (Mr H. Larssen) in a short but oithy speech described some of the 'difficulties that had had to be overcome."' It had been a long pull, but a strong pull, and a pull all together. He congratulated the residents of Mangamahoe on erecting such a fine building, and of such a size t lat ought to suffice for the needs of ti?- district for years to come. He complimented the builder (Mr Walter Larson) on the completeness and thoroughness with which the work had been done. On behalf of the hall trustees he thanked the musicians, who were giving their services free, and also the people present who had braved the elements to give their support to the affair. He then, amid aoplause, declared the hall open. The ball opened with a grand march, the following took part in it under the able direction of Mr Sandford, the chief M.C.:—Mr W.
