CARTERTON.
(From Ojr Own Correspondent.) Thursday. On the • local reserve, this after£Hn, Rover B defeated Rover A aFtootball by 9 points to 3. There was a fair attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of the Oddfellows' Lodge, held in the Foresters' Hall, last evening. Bro. Lairb occupied the chair. Routine business only was transacted. The fortnightly meeting of the Carterton Fire Brigade was held in the Brigade Station last evening. Captain Lumley occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. The Secretary reported a balance of £266 16s Id on the building fund. The Overseer reported that the erection of the new station was proceeding satisfactorily. The station should be ready for occupation in about a month's time. Lieut. Toomath reported that the Borough Council had" decided to connect the new station with the gas service free of cost. t The matter of securing ringing appliances for the beii to be erected in the new station was left in the hands of the Building Committee with power to act. A report was received from the members of the South Carterton Brigade stating that subscriptions were coming _in satisfactorily towards the erection of a station at that, end of the town, and also for the erection of a firebell tower. It was decided to challenge the Mdsterton Fire Brigade to play a football match on a date to be arranged. A wedding which created a good deal of local interest took place at St. Maik's Church, this afternoon, when M : ss Ruth Canton, daughter of Mr G. Y- Canton. Borough Overseer, was mairied to Mr J. Gillies, of Carturtor. The ceremony was performed Ly the Rev. R. Young, vicar of St. Mark's, in the presence of a large mmber of relatives and friends of the 'young couple. A large number of guests sat down to the wedding breakfast at the residence of the bride's parents. A considerable number of useful presents were received. by Mr arrt Mrs Gillies. Mr and Mrs Gillies left by the evening train en route for Palmerston North, where the honeymoon is to be spent. A very enjoyable social was held at Parkvale, last evening, visitors being present from all parts of the district. The floor was in excellent order, and the music supplied by Miss Petersen (violin) and Miss Berrill (piano) was all that could be desired. Messrs J. G. Oates and J. Johnson verv ably carried out the duties of M's.C. and extras were played by Misses Lawrence, Oates and Monihan aryyaSfedames W. Bannin and Beard. <(Kere was a very fair attendance of members at the "fortnightly meeting of the Methodist Mutual Improvement Society, h°ld in the schoolroom, last evening, when the Rev. W. J. Elliott delivered an interesting lecture on "The Art of Conversation." The chair was occupied by the Mayor (Mr W. Moore). A humorous recitation, entitled, "People Will Talk," was given by Miss Meenken. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Eiliott for his address.
