MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee held last evening was attended by Messrs R. Brown (chairman), J. Carpenter, H. O'Leary H. 11. Cork, W. A. Fendall, G. Townsend, E. H. Waddington and Rev. J. N. Buttle. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £2B 16s Id. The Secretary of the Timaru School Committee wrote stating that their school, with *in attendance of between 600 and 700 pupils, was very free from epidemics, and they attributed this to the manner in which the school was cleaned. A quantity of sawdust was soaked in sheep dip and then swept over the floor, and this gathered the dust as it went. The Committee thought this irforma--tion might be of use to other Committees in the colony. The Chief Health Officer also wrote recommending this method of cleansing the school. ' I The Chairman stated that this method had been in vogue at the Masterton School for a number of years, and he considered that the school could not be better served in reference to health and so forth than it was at present. The Secretary of the Wellington Education Board reported that Mr A. W. Hogg had been elected to the Board unopposed. The Town Clerk wrote in reply to the Committee's letter of the 12th inst., in reference to the state of the footpath in Chapel Street at the back of the School, and informed the Committee that a footpath has been authorised on the east side of Chapel Street from Renall Street to Cornwall Street, and that the work would be put in hand as soon as the conditions are favourable. This work it was understood would remedy the trouble complained of. In reply to the Committee's request that the Clerk of Works should be instructed to prepare plans for a new door at the main school, the Secretary of the Wellington Education Board stated that the Board had argeed to comply with 'the request, it being understood, however, that the Board's contribution to the cost should not exceed £ls. the amount stated in the replication. The sub -tO£iiii:ittee appointed to interview the Mayor in reference to the site for the public baths submitted their report. They stated that they had had a very favourable reception, and the Mayor was in accord with the views of the Committee. The Chairman informed the meeting that the Borough Council had since decided to erect the baths on the site recommended by the Committee and the work would in all probability be put in hand shortly. A resolution was passed expressing pleasure that the site for the baths had been fixed as indicated by the Committee, and trusting that the work would b? put in hand as soon as possible. The visiting members reported that various matters had been attended to at the school. It was decided to draw the Truant Officer's attention to the large absentee list. Accounts amounting to £S6 2s Gd were passed for payment. Messrs R. Brown, J. Carpenter and the Rev. J. N. Buttle were apppointed visiting members for the month.
