According to the fifth part of the Victorian Year Book, which has just been issued, the number of old age pensioners in that State in 1906 was 10,786, which is equal to about 16 per cent, of the estimated number of persons ir. the State

aged '65 years and over. The amount paid was £189,127. The total amount paid since the inception of the system in January Ist, 1901, to the end of last year, was £1,326,727.

Mr John Lindsay, a visitor from Siam, and who has had some experience in Singapore, is of opinion that the waste knds north of Auckland would make a very successful locality for growing rubber. Speaking to a Post reporter on this subject, Mr Lindsay said he had seen the rubber trees growing in the Singapore district, and he was satisfied that the trees would flourish in the poor clay country of Auckland. Rubber trees were not so much in need of soi' as of rain. His opinion, he said, was confirmed by seeing rubber trees growing, amidst a general collection of trees, in an Auckland garden, and when he tapped the tree the yield was liberal. "If rubber could be grown up there," said Mr Lindsay, "New Zealand would have a tremendous source of wealth, for rubber will always be in demand, although it may not kepp at its present high price. In the Singapore fields areas of 100 acres yield a clear profit of £I,OOO per annum."
