LATE SCULLING.
THE WEBB-TOWNS MATCH By Telegraph—Press Association
Received August 6, 12.38 a.m. SYDNEY, August 5. The stakes were paid over to W. Webb to-night. Mr Coombes, on handing the money over to Webb, said that the race had been contested in the best possible spirit, and that no unworthy motive prompted Webb when the mishap occurred. Webb, an amateur cf yesterday, was the world's champion to-day. He had achieved the object in two races. Mr Rush, !the referee, said that he was satisfied that both men acted honourably. Webb might have devi ated a little out of his course, but he was quite sure Webb had done it unintentionally. Mr J. M. Field, the Engl.'s'i backer of Towns Brothers, said that they all knew that Mr Rush was an honourable man, but he believed a mistake ha! been made. Therefore he would give Webb £IOO out of his own pocket, and £250 expenses, if he would give Towns another race in a month's time.
Mr Tuck, Webb's backer, considered that Mr Field's remarks were an insult to Mr Rush. (Applause). "If," continued Mr Tuck, "you have got a man send him to Wanganui." Mr Webb thanked all those present for the kind treatment accorded to him, and regretted that there had been any argument about the decision. With regard to Mr Field's offer he had come over to win the championship and having done so thought he should be allowed to take it back to New Zealand. (Applause). If he was challenged by Towns the latter would not be kept waiting, provided Towns' challenge was the first in. Mr Towns, in responding to the toast of his health, said that he would like to explain his position, not that he reckoned he was defeated on his merits. He did not say that Webb took the water intentionally, but from the moment he claimed a foul he did not persevere further.
