SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

TRAIN BREAKS AWAY. DASHES OVER AN EMBANKMENT. A GUARD KILLED. TWO GUARDS AND A PLATELAYER SERIOUSLY INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. ROTORUA, August 4. A serious accident between eight and nine o'clock on Saturday night to a goods train bound from Auckland to Rotorua. The train, which was a long one—there being two engines, a large number of trucks and a passenger carriage—was ascending a steep grade three miles on ths Rotorua side of Putaruru, when all the trucks, the carriage and the guard's vans, became detached from the engines, and went down hill at a terrific pace till reaching a culvert, when they went over an embankment into a gully forty feet below. J. Lowe, a guard, was killed. He never became conscious, and died in three quarters of an hour. James Dwyer, another guard, had an arm broken, and received other iniuries. Tyer, an assistant guard, also had an arm broken, and received other injuries. 'Kingdon, a plafce-i wev, was injured internally, and is_ suffering from concussion of the brain. Dwyer resides at Mt. Eden; Tyer at Auckland; and Kingdon at Putaruru. There were four passengers in the carriage, but none of them were injured, although the carriage went over the embankment. One of the engines brought the injured men here, arriving at four o'clock this morning. The injured men are at the Sanatorium. Dr. Esselberger, of Matamata, was one of the pasesengers, and rendered valuable aid to the injured. Lowe was a favourite guard, and was greatly respected. Several trucks contained cattle, and many were injured. The accident happened at a place known as "Bell's Siding," where a new line has been constructed. No particulars are available as to the cause of the accident. The engine 3 were driven by Engine-drivers Naylor and Cooper. The train was due at Rotorua at eight o'clock, and was rarming late. All the trucks, carriage and guard's vans were greatly damaged. — :
