MaNAWATU v. wairarapa. The Manawatu and Wairarapa representative teams met on the Mast?rton Showgrounds yesterday afteraoon. Neither team had their full strength in the field, Manawatu having several of their best players absent. The ground was in a heavy state, and the ball was greasy and difficult to handle. The game was principally confined to the forwards, and in this department Wairarapa had considerably the best of the play. The game was devoid of any brilliant back work, only an occasional bout of passing relieving the monotony. The collaring of the visitors was very uncertain. The teams were a3 follow: — Wairarapa Full-back, S. McKenzie; three-quarters, Thompson, Groube and McLachlar; five-eighth, Kinzett; half-back, Minett; wings, Gray and Henderson; forwards, Johnson, Todd, H. McKenzie, Lyall, Wines, C. Ross and Spackman. Manawatu — Full - back, Downes; three-qu-irters, Martis, Carroll and Walsh; five-eighths, Pirani and Rout; half-back, Anslow; wing, Waldegrave; forvvai-ii, Wingate, Vincent, Hooker, McNae, Kyle, Shadbolt and Burgess. Manawatu won the toss and defended the southern goal. The game had not long commenced when the visitors were forced down from a forward rush headed by Gray. From the kick-off Spackman took a mark, and B. McKenzie had a shot at goal. The ball struck the bar and bounced over, but as it had struck an opposing player's hand no goal was allowed. Minett snapped up the ball and set the backs in motion. The ball went to Kinzett, who passed to Groube, but the latter failed to take the ball. A Manawatu passing rush was taken part in by Pirani, Carroll and Martis, but "the latter was collared, and Groube found the line. Henderson sent the ball to Minett, who transferred to McLachlan, who was thrown out of touch. During a Wairarapa attack Groube attempted to pot a goal, but the ball went just outside the posts. Play was now mostly confined to Manawatu's territory. Wairarapa had several attempts at goal by potting and penalty kicks. At last their efforts were rewarded. From a scrum on the line Gray dived over and scored first blood for Wai - rarapa. McKenzie easily converted. Wairarapa 5 Manawatu 0 A spell of uninteresting play, mostly in favour of the home team, then ensued. Wairarapa's next score was obtained by E. McKenzie kicking a splendid goal from a penalty. Wairarapa 8 Manawatu 0 Henderson, Johnson and Spackman engaged in a fine forward attack. Henderson sent the ball to Johnson, who passed back to Henderson. The latter sent it to Spackman who had passed the full-back and had no one to beat, but he missed the ball, and a certain score was lost. Half-time sounded with the score : Wairarapa 8 Manawatu 0 When play had been resumed a short time Thompson made a dodgy run, and passed to Henderson, but the latter was grassed. The ball then came to Groube, who marked. E. McKenzie failed to kick a goal from an easy oosition. * A long kick sent the ball to Downes, who was slow in picking it up, and Groube J;im before he could get !..'_-ki^kj^.

and carried him over the goal-line, where he forced. Wairarapa kept up the attack, and Groube made a splendid run, beating about six opponents, but lost the ball near the line. Kinzett tried to gather up the leather while running at top speed, but failed to do so, and a force resulted. Wines took the ball at his toe over the line, but was not fast enough, and Pirani touched down. Lyall, Gray and Henderson were prominent in a forward attack, but off-side play was responsible for clearing Manawatu's line. The visitors removed play to Wairarapa's 25 by means of a passing run between Anslow, Rout and Walsh. Gray was instrumental in warding off the attack. Play was removed to Manawatu's territory, and E. McKenzie placed another goal from a penalty. Wairarapa 11 Manawatu ■ 0 Lyali, Todd, Gray and Spackman were associated in an attack on the - visitors' line, but without result. I Manawatu then broke away and j attacked. At this stage Groube badly ! sprained his ankle, and had to be carried off the field. Just previously H. McKenzie injured his ankle and retired. Wairarapa were now playing with thirteen men. Shortly after play resumed, a Manawatu passing rush ended in Martis crossing the Wairarapa line. Dowr.es failed with the kick. Wairarapa , 11 Manawatu ... ... 3 Lyall, Spackman, Todd, Gray, C. Ross and Johnson put in good work in an attack on the visitors' line, but no further score resulted, and the game ended with the scores. — Wairarapa 11 Manawatu 3 Mr A. B.
