A BIG FIRE.
CONEY ISLAND DEVASTATED. TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE HOMELESS. TWENTY-SEVEN FIREMEN INJURED. Received July 30, 8.20 a.m. EW YOR K, July 29. Fire devastated Coney Island, a pr.pular New York resort. The dan-age is estimated at a quarter of a million sterling. A sudden change in the wind prevented the destruction of two million pounds' worth of property. Two thousand people have been rendered homeless. Twenty-seveu firemen sustained injuries. (Coney Island is a part of Long Island, New York, stretching about seven miles from east to west, and situated about five miles from Brooklyn. It is the most popular wateringplace of New York city. On the extreme west end of a sand-bar, it has a fine stretch of beach about five miles long.)
