A PECULIAR CASE.
ALLEGED MISTAKEN IDENTITY
At the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, an information was laid by a young woman against a young man named Bertram E. Hastings, for failing to make adequate provision for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. The case was considered by the Magistrate to be a very extraordinary one. The complainant alleged that she knew the defendant in Christcburch as "Jack Holt." in June.. 1906. On the other hand the defendant stated that he had never been known by any other name than the one under which he was charged. He also stated that he was in Wellington and Foxton during the month of June, 1906, and had not been in Christchurch since September, 1905. The case was adjourned until August 16th to allow of further enquiries being made concerning the whereabouts of the defendant | in June, 1906. j Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the ' informant, and Mr H. C. Robinson for the defendant.
