POULTRY, PIGEON AND CANARY SHOW.
FIRST DAY. The annual show of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association was opened in the Drill Hall, Masterton, yesterday morning. This year's show compares very favourably with that held twelve months aero. There are twenty more exhibitors this year, but the number of entries remains about the same. There were exhibitors from all parts of the Wellington Province, from Wellington in the south to Wanganui in the north. There were also a large number of exhibitors from Dnnnevirke. The judge of the poultry and ducks was Mr T. Doig, of Khandaliah, and of the pigeons and canaries, Mr J. F. FitzgeraH, of Wellington. The judging .was completed in good time yesterday, and the awards appear to have given general satisfaction. The show was opened to the public at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and there was a fair attendance of fanciers. The attendance of the general public was larger in the evening. It is expected that there will be a larger number of visitors present to-day, and this evening, as thejshow will not finally close until 10 p.m. The general arrangements for the show are in the capable hands of the secretary, Mr J. Cairns, who is being assisted by an energetic body of officials. In pigeons this year's entries show an increase on last year. The quality is better than last year. The judge, in conversation with a Wairarapa Age reporter, said that the exhibits in the Working Homer classes were as good as he had seen at any show in the North Island. Mr Fitzgerald expected to see more entries in the Oriental Frill classes, considering that the Masterton Association had the North Island championship in this class this year. The Frills that are exhibited, however, are a good lot. The bird that won the North Island Championship is owned by Mr D. Murphy, of Wellington, and is a good specimen. Another good bird was a blondonette, shown by Mr D. Murphy. It was a better bird than the champion in head points, but considering that the latter was a lace bird and harder to obtain, the championship was awarded to it. The Magpie birds shown were of the correct type. Mr J. Andrews exhibited the best Magpie pigeon in the show. Mr L. H. Spackman's exhibit would have been among the winners in this section but it was a Dun, and shown in the black classes, whereas it should have been exhibited in the "any other variety" section. The number of canaries shown this year was in excess of those exhibited last year, but in the majority of cases the qualily was not of a very high standard. The best canary in the show was shown by Miss B. Cross, of Masterton. The bird was true to type. Most of the other birds were of slim build. The cage birds made a good display. In conclusion, Mr Fitzgerald said that some of the classes were better filled than is the case at the Wellington Show. The judge of the poultry consideieJ the exhibits a good lot. He had some difficulty in separating the birds to make his awards in some classes, notably the Indian Runner ducks. In such varieties as the silver-laced Wyandotte pullets and hens and goldens, the Andalusians, Indian Runner ducks and Pekin ducks the judge's opinion was that the exhibits would hold their own in any show in the North Island. There were one or two varieties that were not too strongly represented, notably the Leghorns, both brown and white, the quality of which was only moderate. Mr R. Bailey, of Karori, won the North Island championship in Andalusians with a splendid cockerel. "This is a good out and out bird; as good as I have seen for some time," said the judge to a Wairarapa Age reporter. Mr Doig was loud in his praise of the Indian Runner and Pekin ducks. The former were especially good, while the winning drake in the latter class was an excellent specimen. This bird was shown by Mr H. J. E. Meyrick. Mr Doig was not inclined to discuss the individual merits of the birds, but the reporter gathered from his remarks that he was thoroughly satisfied with the quality of the exhibits in the majority of the classes.
