The latest dredging returns to hand are as follow: — Hessey Dredge 18oz ldwt for the week; Masterton Dredga 1240z 3dwt for 223 hours' work. An Auckland Press Association telegram states that Sidney O'Neill, of the bucKjumping combination, was fined £3, yesterday, for blacking the eye of Sidney Luella, the clown. At the Dunedin Police Court, yesterday, states a Press Association telegram, Thomson, Jacobson and Callaghan, three firemen on the Rippingham Grange, were committed for trial on a charge of broaching cargo from the hold while the vessel was lying at the Victoria wharf. The Masterton Municipal Brass Band will render a programme of music in the Park to-morrow afternoon, commencing at 2.30 o'clock. The programme will be as follows — Triumphant march, "Entry c c the Gladiators" ; euphonium solo, "Eclipse"; cornet solo, "Dream of Heaven"; waltz, "In Dahomey"; marches, " Washington Greys" and "Light of the Regiment." At a meeting of the Holidays Committee of the Wairarapa Employers' Association, held yesterday morning, the following resolution was unanimously carried: — "That this Committee strongly approves of the weekly statutory half-holiday being observed on Thursday as at present, and that the petition now being signed by shopkeepers and residents is heartily endorsed." The secretary was instructed to forward a copy of the resolution to Mr A W. Hogg, M.H.R. In reply to a letter from tha Masterton and District Workers' Land Settlement League, asking him to send a departmental officer to Masterton to make an inspection and report on the land around Masterton suitable for closer settlement, the Minister for Lands (Hon. R. McNab) has written to the Secretary of the League stating that he has forwarded a letter to the Chairman of the Land Purchase Board with a request that he should confer with the League on the matter on his next visit to the district. The members of the legal profession in Masterton are at present signing the following petition to Sir Robert Stout,- Chief Justice, with a view to having sittings of the Supreme Court held in Masterton: — "Your Honor,—We, the undersigned members of the Bar in the Wairarapa District, desire to bring under your notice the advisability of holding circuit sittings of the Supreme Court in Masterton, to meet the demands of the district. We feel that to set out in detail the reasons in favour of holding such sittings would simply mean the stating of facts that are already obvious to your Honor." The quarterly meeting of the Masterton Cemetery Trustees was held, yesterday afternoon, there being present—Messrs A. R. Bunny (chairman), P. Gordon, and W. Seilar. The Treasurer reported as follows:—Receipts for the quarter, £3l 8s; disbursements, £29 2s 6a; balance at last meeting, £lO6 8s 9d; balance at date, £IOB 14s 3d. Accounts amounting to £4O 13s 9d were passed for payment. Messrs W. Seilar and A. R. Bunny were appointed a Works Committee for the); ensuing quarter. The sexton's report stated that the work of opening up paths in the cemetery and metalling the same had been completed. New paths were now being made. The sexton suggested that a belt of trees should be planted along the south boundary of the cemetery. The report was referred to the Works Committee. Trouble was experienced in effecting an entrance to a room in which the smoking was supposed to be taking place, as several of the Chinese resisted the police with billets of wood. After a struggle two were arrested and a number of pipes and other appurtances were seized. A small box containing opium was also found on one of those arrested. A number of others escaped through windows while an entrance was being effected. The two arrested were charged at the court yesterday morning, and have* been remanded till Monday next. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that Dawson and McKechnie's bis sawmill at Ratanui has been burned down. A woman named Mary Gibson failed to appear at the Dunedin Police Court, yesterday, states a Press Association telegram, to answer a charge of having, on February 3rd, at Chi'istchurch, made a false declaration regarding the birth of her child. The case v,*as remanded till to-day, the inspector saying that a warrant would be issued for the arrest of the accused, who was now in Invercargill. The scenery in the Town Hall., which was in a rather dilapidated state, is at present being re-painted by Mr E. J. Chilton. Both sides of the setting are being painted. One side will represent the interior of a fashionable residence, and the other will be a representation of a poorer class of dwelling. When in use the renovated scenes will give an improved appearance to the stage. At the Dunedin Magistrate's Court, yesterday, John Goram was committed for trial on a charge of the theft of £l7 8s 6d from a fel-low-lodger, named Drake, in a boarding house. The latter, it is alleged, went to bed on Wednesday night leaving the money in a pocketbook. The money was gone in the morning, and also a gold scarf-pin. The tie-pin was found in Goram's possession and also the notes. At the monthly meeting of the Directors of the Workers' Mutual building Society, held last evening, the chairman (Mr R. Krahagen), after the usual routine business had been deal with, stated that as the contributions had been coming in freely, he was pleased to be able to declare an appropriation by sale of £3OO on August 15tL, and that a ballot for another .£3OO would take place on August 29th. A Tairua Press Association message states that the steamer Onslow visited the scene of the wreck of the scow Surprise again on Thursday. Constable Brown and party searched the beaches, but could find no bodies. They secured a flag and some broken life-buoys, and the name board. The steamer called at Ohui and brought Harry Jackson, the sole survivor, to Tairua. He is still weak. Mr Knight gave a faithful representation of the character of Captain Gerard. It might be said that Mr Knight has never been seen here in a finer character study. Mr Leslie Victor showed marked ability in the role of Tallyrand, and as Napoleon Mr Hubert Willis did remarkably well. Miss Marion Grey acquitted herself very creditably as the Countesse de Roquelaure. The other outstanding characters of a powerful cast were Major Brow (Mr PI. J. Bentley), Major Olivier (Mr Harry Plimmer), Monsieur d'Albert (Mr Rupert Julian), Sergeant Boucle (Mr Dale Revenall), and Agnes (Miss Dorothy Sydney). The Tui Hockey Club will hold a practice at Lansdowne, this afternoon, at 3 o'clock. All members are requested to attend. Mr A. Stempa wrote to the meetingof the Masterton Cemetery Trustees, yesterday, resigning his position on the Trust. He suggested that Mr H. O'Leary should be appointed to take his place. The Trustees accepted the resignation and decided to recommend the appointment of Mr O'Leary to fill the vacancy. The monthly meeting of the Methodist Band of Hope was held in the Schoolroom, last evening, the Rev. J. N. Buttle presiding. There were about 30 members present. During the evening recitations were given by Misses E. Miller, Gertie Morris, Bessie Morris, and Bernard Brunton, Roy Brunton and Willie Morris, and solos by Misses Elsie King and Gladys Church.
