The attendance of the public at Trentham on Wednesday was large, and representative, and speculation was decidedly brisk throughout, £18,338 being put through the totalisator, and makirg a total of over £34,000 for the two days. The Club will probably register a grand total of £50,000 by Saturday, which for a winter gathering goes to prove what a hold "The Sport of Kings" has over the public of this colony. The course was rather slippery, caused principally by a heavy frost, which covered the ground until about 10 o'clock. Racing commenced with the Glasgow Handicap, of 5 furlongs. Intelligence, looking extremely well, was made a decided favourite, but only succeeded in running second to Jolly Friar, who put in a fast finish. Gawa.'n was very prominent until reach!ig half-way down the straight, when he fell back. For the Karori Hack Handicap, Waikaraka nnd William were more strongly supported than Martyrium. The latter, however, nicely ridden by F. D. Jones, scored with a bit in hand by half a length from Waikaraka, with Pearlie close up third. No less than sixteen jumpers were saddled up for the Second Hack Hurdles. The field included good performers such as Landlock Matakokiri, Kaipetipeti, Stayboy, Repulse. From the despatch the pace was made a cracker and the jumping of the whole of the candidates was a treat to witness. Most of the running was carried on by Kaipetipeti and Stayboy, with Regulation lying handy. The latter was brought through under pressure entering the ho::ie turn, and staying the distance out scored by a length from Aotsa. The principal e vent of the meeting, the Wellington Steeplechase, of Si mi:,?, then came up for decision. The acceptance of four naturally lessened the interest of the public in the race, consequently speculation on it was not at all spirited. Khama, by Castor —Valentina, a gelding not at all unlike that good horse Kiatere, was made a good favourite, Auckland sportsmen being very confident of his victory. Haydn, Waitarere and Evenlode were very evenly backed. For over two miles and a-half Haydn and Khama were practically u together, the latter "perhaps having a slight advantage during the earlier part of the contest. At the five furlongs post Haydn had his companion settled, and from this out Julian, on the former, sent him along at top. The excitement then became more intense, for Evenlode could be seen making up his lee-way in good style, and many were there who loudly heralded his victory. He reached Haydn at the top of the straight, and the t\vo jumped the last obstacle together. Whips were at once drawn on both, and in a desperate finish Haydn was landed victorious by a short neck. The jumping throughout was faultless on the part of each contestant, and the finish one of the most exciting ever witnessed in the colony over such a distance. A goodly portion of the crowd greeted the winner and runner-up with loud cheers on their return to scale, thus showing that genuine enthusiasm was the outcome of the spirited contest. The winner is now thirteen years old, and his performance was highly creditable. A splendid field of thirteen went out for the Waterloo Handicap of seven furlongs. Seaman, who had been galloping in great style training tracks was made a firm favourite, despite good performers like Kuku, Lllerton, Medallist, Kurawaka and Chatterer taking part in the race. Kuku ai.d Medallist had charge of affairs to the home turn, where Seaman joined the leaders, nnd in a great finish beat Medallist by a nose. Seventeen lined up before the barrier for the Jumpers' Flat Handicap, which was to a great extant spoiled by Prospector, Le Beau, Hatley, Needlework, Rosegrove and Bonheur falling at the turn leading out of the straight. The race was somewhat of a procession, and at the finish Southern Cross won by two lengths from Ben Johnson. The racing was brought to a conclusion with the Thorndon Hack Handicap, 'which was won by Nukutihi, by Days tar.

The following are suggested as likely to run prominently in the third day's events at the Wellington meeting to-morrow: Onslow Handicap—Jolly Friar and St. Claimer. Crofton Hack Handicap.—Compass and Iceland. Hack Hurdles—Stayboy and Landlock. July Steeplechase—Haydn. Winter Oats Kuku and Clanchattan. Final Hurdles— Pushful and Le Beau. Kia Ora Hack—Aotea. WAIRARAPA HUNT CLUB. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. The programme of the annual steeplechase meeting in connection wih the Wairarapa Hunt Cluh is advertised in this morning's issue. This popular meeting, which is to be held on the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's course, on Thursday, August 15th, is an event that is looked forward to with keen interest throughout the Wairarapa, and given fine weather its success should be assured. The attractiveness of the programme reflects great credit on the Club, and should receive satisfactory response from owners. There are no less than seven events, made up of three steeplechases, hunters' hurdles, ladies' bracelet, hack handicap and handicap flat race. Entries will close with the Secretary, Mr Norman H. James, at 9 p.m., on Saturday, August-3rd.
