RACING.
The latest English papers to hand, give the information that L. H. Hewitt won the Salisbury Cup on Mr J. F. Buchanan's Golden Measure. The horse was quoted at "9 to 2 in the betting and won in a canter by four lengths. A few days later Hewitt had another winning mount, riding Shy Lad, an Bto 1 chance, to victory in the Horton Selling Plate, of five furlongs, his mount running the distance in 59 3-ssec. Shy Lad won by half a length, and a writer in the English Chronicle, who is anything but favourable to Hewitt's riding, says: "The New Zealand jockey, Hewitt, rode a fine race on Shy Lad in the Horton Plate at .Epsom."
MARTON JOCKEY CLUB. The appearance of the programme of the annual meeting of the Marton Jockey Club in another column denotes that another season is near at hand. The Marton meeting, to be held on September 4th and sth, is the first totalisator meeting of the season in this island. The Marton Club is the first on the West Coast between Wellington and New Plymouth to introduce the double machine. The stakes. sh~'.v an increase in several events, the total to be distributed being £955, which is £125 more tnan owners received last year. An improvement to the programme is an open sprint each day, the distances being five furlongs and six furlongs, respectivelv. The principal open flat race on the firs'; day remains at 100 sovs; but on the second day the Marton Handicap has been increased to 115 sovs. The programme is made up of four hurdle races, two steeplechases, two welter hack races, a maiden race scurry, and should receive a satisfactory response from owners. Nominations for all handicap events, close on August 16th, at 7 P.m., with Mr Arthur Way (secret carv). The course has been topdre • sd and fenced in since last meeting, and is in excellent order.
TURF NOTES. (By. Zetland.) THE WELLINGTON MEETING. The Winter Meeting at Trentham will be continued to-day. Good acceptances have been received for every event but the principal the Wellington Steeplechase, of 400 sovs., for which there are only four left in. It is quite probable that at least one of these will be withdrawn, leaving only three to go to the post, consequently the interest generally evinced in a race of this kind will be lacking to a great extent. Good contests should be witnessed in the Hack Hurdles, Jumpers' Flat, and Waterloo Handicap. The following are suggested as likely to run prominently in their respective events:— Glasgow Handicap.—Gawain and St. Claimer. Karori Handicap.—Martyrium and Waikaraka. Hack Hurdles. —Matakokiri and Waipu. Steeplechase.—Haydn. Waterloo Handicap.—Kuku and Medallist. Jumpers' Flat.—Asteroid and Bonheur. Thorndon Hack.—Strathcona and Warlock.
