MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
*GAS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE. I A meeting of the Borough Gas and -Finance Committee was held, last •evening, there being present—-Crs F. W. Temple (chairman), J. Elliott, J. ~Yarr, and J. C. Ewington. The Gas Manager reported that the work of laying the gas mains to the new hospital had been completed, and the large gas cooker and the highpressure water supply had been installed in the buildings. Contracts -had besn let for trenching for gas mains in Pownall, Essex, Cole, and Cornwall Streets. The laying of the mains in those streets was now in pifegress. The next work to be undertaken should be the replacing of the present 1J main in Dixon Street from Worksop Road to the Bowling Green by a 3 inch cast iron main, •and the present J J inch main in Bannister Street, from the Gasworks to Worksop Road via Colombo Road by >a 3 inch main. The Manager recommended that four 21 in by 15in D retorts should be set in the remaining arcb in the old retort house at a cost of, approximately, £BO. The plant is in good order. The Committee decided to recommend the Council to procure the four D retorts as recommended by the Manager. The question of replacing: the small mains with larger ones, as mentioned by Mr Blackman, was allowed to stand over. It was decided to go through the list of rates outstanding at the next meeting, also the list of amounts owing to the Council for new culverts. Accounts amounting to £1,731 16s -2d were passed for payment.
