VARIOUS CABLES.
PRESERVED MEAT. LONDON, July 19. Mr R. B. Haldane, Secretary for War, replying in the House of Commons to a question by Mr Henniker Heaton, said it was impossible to alter the date for tenders of preserved meats or fthe Army in the present case, but in future every endeavour would be made to meet the convenience of the Australian market if possible. ; THE HEAT WAVE IN PHILADELPHIA. TWENTY-FIVE DEATHS. NEW YORK, July 19. The heat wave has had serious effects in Philadelphia. In the Benevolent Society's procession, numbering ten thousand persons, over three hundred were prostrated by the heat. Twenty-five died, and fitfy are not expected to recover. The hospitals are full. Many horses were killed.
THE GEORGIA DISASTER. Received July 21, 4.30 p.m. NEW YORK, July 20. The Board of Examination enquired into the battleship Georgia disaster and reports that a flareback was caused by shutting off the air blast too soon while a light wind blowing into the muzzle of the gun ignited the powder which the loaders had in their arms, causing an explosion. Three more of those injured have succumbed, making ten deaths altogether.
