THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1907. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Owing to the quantity of important Parliamentary news, which we publish, this morning, the'leading article and a number of general news items have had to be held over until next issue. The Land and Income Assessment Bill, which contains the Government's proposals in regard to the graduated land tax, was introduced into the House last night, and read for the first time. The schedule of taxation, summarised by our Parliamentary correspondent, is published im another column. We received the complete Bill, per Government memo, last night, but limited space precludes us from making further reference to the measure in the present issue. It costs about £9OO a year to keep in order Albert Park, Auckland. The cost of entertaining the Colonial Premiers in London exceeded £6,000. Dunedin will have to pay a duty of £2,000 to import a gas holder costing £IO,OOO. —Exchange. On Thursday Mr E. Page, solicitor, of Eketahuna, was admitted by Mr Justice Cooper as a barrister of the Supreme Court. The Christc'nurch City Council has agreed to a resolution that all ablebodied men in the employ of the council should receive a minimum wage of 8s per diem. Mr W. P. James, S.M., at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, convicted and discharged a first offender on a charge of having been drunk. The Johannesburg Star states that more than 5,000 bicylces were purchased in a fortnight in Johannesburg because of a breakdown in the electric tramway system. A Press Association cablegram from London announces the death of Edward Pooley, the famous Surrey cricketer. The deceased, who was in his 70th year, in his younger days won much fame as a cricketer. The exact amount collected at the gates at the costume football match on Thursday last in aid of Mr J. K. Blinkhorne was £47 18s lOd. The social in the evening realised about £7. There is a marked shortage of female labour in the New Zealand boot trade at the present time, si V:es a contemporary, and profitable continuous employment could be fou id for fully 200 competent factory hands if they were available. It was reported in Auckland on Thursday night, on information from Taupo, that unusual activity was noticeable at Mounts Ruapehu and Tongariro on Thursday afternoon, at about four. A slight earth tremor was felt in Auckland at 1 p.m.
There have been quite a number of thefts from Parliament House since the commencement of the session. Articles have been missed from the room of the Government Whips, and brushes and other portable articles have also disappeared mysteriously. A conference of automobilists, representing different c'ubs in|;the colony, is to be held in Wellington on Saturday, 27th inst., and Monday, 29th inst., when several important matters will „be considered. The conference is to consider the question of, forming a New Zealand Automobile Association combining all the clubs, or a New Zealand Motor Union independent o? the present clubs. In a lecture on India, at Sydney, a few days ago, Professor David stated that the British Government, finding that a primitive race, the Bhils of the Satpura Hills, were particularly troublesome on account of their want of discrimination between other people's property and their own, had conceived the idea of raising among the most active of the robbers a strong police force. That experiment proved eminently successful. Prospects of Presbyterian revival services in New Zealand are promising. The Rev. J. Wilbur Chapman, D.D., LL.D., has written to the Rev. Dr. Gibb, of Wellington City, in response to an invitation to visit New Zealand in the interests of work amongst young women and for gen eral evangelisation purposes, stating that when he begins his trip around the world New Zealand will have his first consideration.
The law has at times created some weird and wonderful freaks in the animal kingdom. During a discussion in the Full Court at Wellington, yesterday, on ambiguous terms for instance Mr Justice Denniston inferred to a case of trespass in Otago years ago in which it was gravely ruled that a goat was a fowl. According to the Act, says the Post, the bellicose "billy" was a rooster with tail feathers and a crow, and his better half a useful bird with a capacity for egg-laying. A Christchurch builder, who was called as an expert witness to help the Arbitration Court to decide whether a man who makes mantelpieces is a joiner or a cabinetmaker, threw some curious light on the origin of these articles. He stated that in some cases they are made by the builder and in other cases they are bought by him or the owner of the house. Some firms make a specialty of manufacturing high-class mantelpieces, but many people, so the witness said, go to the ironmongers' shops and get cheap ones which are made in Australia by Chinese out of "rubbishy kauri," painted and marbled.
In the course of a brief chat with a Timaru Post reporter, Mr E. Lee, a Temuka farmer who has just returned from a trip to Australia, said that New Zealanders had no idea of the immense areas open for selection. To speak of holdings in acres was amusing. Land transactions were in square miles over there. Some time wa3 spent in Queensland, and a trip to the Darling Downs impressed the New Zealander very much. This is the best soil Mr Lee has ever seen; in places it ranges -in "depth from 4 feet to 49 feet, and is admirably adapted for growing lucerne. He says there is a great future before Queensland; but it lacks at present population and good roads. TH« BEST it).'A''A l 'OS. | The Trust Lands Trustees decided, last evening, to grant Mr C. E. Daniell three months' leave of absence. The ordinary parade of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers, last evening, was attended by thirty-eight men, who were under the command of Captain Morton and Lieutenants Brighting and Hosking. The corps was exercised in company drill. Arrangements are being made by the Masterton Rifle Volunteers to send teams to take part in the military tournament at Palmerston North on November 9th. Teams will probably be entered for the competitions in tent Pitching, physical drill, bayonet exercises, and tug-o'-war. A matter that is likely to cause some discussion at the annual meeting of the Masterton Bowling Club, on Thursday evening next, is the I proposal to convert one of the greens into a lawn tennis court. If this change is agreed to, it is considered that it will increase tne membership of the club. Brigadier Albiston, through illhealth, will not be able to conduct the services, to-morrow, at the Salvation Army Barracks. Adjutant Brown, who has been here on a former occasion as a "special," has been appointed to conduct the week-end meetings, including the social meeting on Monday night. Two young men named Henry Edward Shine and Richard Reeves were charged at Wellington, yesterday, with having given perjured evidence before Mr W. P. James, S.M., at Masterton. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan stated that the accused had been brought up at" Masterton and remanded. The police desired a further remand until 22nd inst. The application was granted. The Presbyterian Young People's Association held a social in the Sunday School Room, last evening, there being a large attendance. During the evening items were contributed by Misses F. and J. McGregor and Messrs C. Ibbetson, Trickett and M. Gordon. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, and were much appreciated. The social, which was an enjoyable one, was brought to a conclusion with the singing of the National Anthem.
A good boot repairer is wanted by the W.F.C.A. A kind person is wanted to take charge of a girl four years old. A white bull will be sold at the Masterton pound at noon to-day. A competent coachbuilder and wheelwright is wanted for Takaka. Messrs Hannah and Co. are offering 350 pairs of sample boots and shoes at cost price. Particulars of a dark bay gelding, impounded from Hogg Crescent, are advertised by the poundkeeper. Mr P. Hamill advertises special prices which are being observed in several leading lines during his stocktaking sale. The first rehearsal of the Masterton Opei'atic Society will be held in St. ' Matthew's Schoolroom at 8 o'clock on Monday evening. The Masterton Borough Council invite fresh tenders for a culvert in Renall Street and for trenching for water mains. At the Masterton Auction Mart, to-day, a large range of nearly new furnitura will be sold. A gaslight display at the mart, last evening, was largely attended. There will also be sold several horse o , vehicles, and a quantity of sundries.
Special lines in gents' chrome balmorals and ladies' glace boots and shoes are advertised by the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Clothing Factory. As a guarantee of the reliability of the goods supplied"the "H. 8." brand is to be found on every article. The local branch of the Singer Manufacturing Company have just received another shipment of their latest improved sewing machines. These machines were on view at the recent Exhibition, and their workmanship and general finish were greatly admired. They are now on view at the local branch and pre well worth inspection. To-day, Mr A. Henderson, watchmaker, jeweller, and optician, is making a special show of high-class goods, which have just been received from Home. The goods were specially selected by the proprietor, and comprise the latest and most artistic in gold and silver ware. The show presents a most attractive appearance, and includes a hundred and one lines suitable for px*esentations. Mr Fred Staples' new dining and supper rooms, in Bannister Street, were opened for public inspection last evening, when a large number of the public availed themselves of the opportunity offered. The rooms have been splendidly fitted up and artistically decorated. The furniture, which is all new, was supplied by Mr J. R. Nicol, of the Masterton Auction Mart. The rooms will be opened today. Particulars of the bill-of-fare for to-day's luncheon appear elsewhere.
Tns Oelebuits op Sander and Sons Pore Volatile Eucalypti Extkact is unive-sally acknowledged. Koyalfcy honours it, and the entire medical profession has adopted its use. Imitations sprang up without number. Tho latest of them—as styled •' Extracts "—was oil foisted upon the trusting and unwary under the gi-osse.ft misuse of Sander ahd Sons' reputation. Sander and Sons instituted nn actiou at the Supreme Court of Victoria, before His Honour Chief Justice Sir J. There was no "wash-up" of the Masterton dredge owing to alterations being made to the dredge. A Greymouth correspondent states that important developments are about to take place a the State Coal Mine. It is intended to extend the railway up the Seven-mile Creek to tap a wide seam of anthracite coal. A"discovery of the greatest importance in all rabbit-infested districts has been made by Mr John Murray, of Woodbank, near Blenheim states a Press Association telegram, in the shape of an eifective treatment of distemper amongst ferrets which hitherto had proved fatal in most cases. Alcohol, given in the form of brandy and milk, cured the ferrets almost without exception. In reply to a question in the House as to the adulteration of cigarettes, the Minister of Education who is apparently responsible for cigarettes also—said that there was no need for manufacturers to use bad tobacco as there are 26 to 30 cigarettes to the ounce, so a packet of 10 cigarettes only contained tobacco worth at the outside 2d if the tobacco cost 8s per lb.
"My attention has been drawn to the insanitary and dilapidated state of the cocoanut matting in the Town Hall," said Mr R. Krahagen at the meeting of the Trust Lands Trustees, last evening. He went on to say that the matting had been on the floor of the Hall for about nine years, and he considered that it should be removed and replaced, say, with rubber linoleum. The condition of the Town Hall looking into, and a few pounds spent now might save heavy expenditure in the future. Mr Hessey agreed that something should be done to improve the Town Hall. He would like to see a new "drop scene" placed on the stage and the outside of the building repainted. After a brief discussion on the matter, the Trustees decided to visit the Town Hall on Monday*afternoon, and see what required to be ..done to the building. Death Bate Decreased. The "Chicago Tirbune," in a recent article on what medical snince has been able to accomplish for the fcenfitof human iiy, drew particular attention to the one great fact that stands pre-c-minent in the light of reliable statistics, viz , that the deathrate of the world has, through its agency, been positively decreased.
