OUTPUT OF COAL. Received July 18, 11.14 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. The coal output for the year amounted to 160,600 tons, an increase of 5,500 tons on the previous year. GOLD YIELD. Received July 18, 11.14 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. The gold yield of Victoria last year amounted to 772,290 ounces valued at £3,270,000. Dividends distributed by gold companies amounted to £485,000, an increase of £33,000 on the previous year. DEATH OF JUSTICE MOLESWORTH. Received July 18, 11.14 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. Mr Justice Molesworth, who obtained six months' leave of absence, died aboard a steamer en route to Queensland to recruit his health.
THE-*NEW MAIL CONTRACT.
Received July 18, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, Juy 18. In the Federal House of Representatives members strongly urged the importance of providing refrigerated space in connection with the new mail contract. The Postmaster-General, Mr Chap man, announced that the State Governments had been asked to cooperate in securing refrigerated space, and their replies were being awaited. THE RECENT WAVE OF CRIME.
Received July 18, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. A Bill has been introduced into the Victorian Parliament to amend the Crimes Bill. It gives the police very stringent powers for dealing with suspects and others. The measure is an outcome of the recent wave of crime. THE FEDERAL CAPITAL SITE. Received July 18, 10.29 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. A Capital Site Bill has been introduced into the Federal House. It names Dalgety as the proposed site. WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. Received July 18, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 18. The Wireless Telegraphy Committee's report recommends nine stations on the Australian coast and in New Guinea for wireless telegraph purposes, Sydney being placed first in importance. The conference se'es no necessity for establishing communication with New Zealand, since it would be of use only in the remote contingency of threo existing cables being cut.
UNITED STATES TARIFF. Received July 18, 9.46 p.m. WASHINGTON, July 18. Senator Hopkins, after interviewing President Roosevelt, announced that the Republican leaders had decided against any revision of the tariff until after the Presidential election.
THE RAND STRIKERS. Received July 18, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, July 18. The Miners' Federation of Great Britain has cabled £I,OOO to the Rand strikers. EMPEROR OF KOREA. Received July 18, 9.46 p.m. SEOUL, July 18. The Premier of Korea has asked the Emperor to abdicate the throne in favour of the Crown Prince owing to his action in sending a deputation to The Hague Convention. The Premier suggested that the Emperor should go to Tokio and apologise to Japan. The Emperor made no definite reply to the suggestion, and it is unlikely that he will yield without a struggle. Received July 18, 9.46 p.m. TOKIO, July 18. Viscount Hayashi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has sailed for Korea. "OUIDA."
EXAGGERATED REPORTS. Received July 18, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, July 17. Reuter's Agency reports that "Ouida" (Mile, de la Rames), the novelist, is able to leave her bed. She is annoyed at the exaggerated reports regarding her health and position.
