MASTERTON TELEGRAPH OFFICE.
THE LATEST IMPROVEMENTS.
Mr W. S. Furby, Inspector of Telegraphs for the Wellington provincial district, has just completed the work of installing the instruments required in the local telegraph office in the upstairs portion of the Post Office building. A test board constructed to accommodate douMe the number of leadiog-in wires as were used under former conditions is row in full operation, and its appearance bears excellent testimony to the importance of Masterton as an intermediate testing station. All the principal circuits used for intercommunication between Auckland and Wellington and Napier and Wellington can be terminated at the Masterton office with the greatest ease and expedition, so excellent are the facilities offered by the improved form of testing apparatus. Several extra sets'of instruments have also been installed in order to meet the growing demands of the district m the direction of telegraph and telephone communication. Besides what is technically termed a double-current duplex set, a single-current duplex has been specially fitted up for the purpose of carrying on telegraph work on the V_s3ae circuits (metallic) as are in use at the Telephone Exchange for the convenience of subscribers. The Department has not deemed it advisable to install a more modern system of telephony than that at present in use just yet, but the apparatus to be fixed on the Queen Street side of the upstairs portion of the building will be of a new type, although based on the same system. This apparatus will not be ready for some time to come.
