MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday morning, there being present: —Crs J. Morris (chairman). W. Harris, and J. Colquhoun. The Treasurer reported as follows: —General Fund Account, dr., £2,118 10s 7d; Local Bodies Loans Account, -cr., £346 2s lOd; Accounts dr., for the month, .£494 I9s 6d. Accounts amounting to £2,387 7s -5d (including £1,313 18s 8d interest on Government loans due August Ist, 1907) were passed for payment. On the motion of Cr Harris, seconded by the Chairman, the Treasurer was authorised to pay the County Ranger the sum of 16s driving fees •on stock sold out of the Masterton pound, which did not realise enough to pay, the Ranger's charges. Mr R. Pitcaithly wrote asking for a refund of £1 for work in connection with repairs on the Tawataia Road. The matter was referred to the representatives of the riding and the Engineer to deal with. A letter was received from Mr B. Culloty asking for a refund of his deposit of £8 se.-.t in with his tender for metal repairs on the Masterton - Waimata Road. Owing to a misunderstanding as to the place where he Wis to obtain the gravel, he was unable to proceed with the contract except at a loss of £BO. It was decided to recommend the Council t> refund the deposit of £8 to Mr Culloty. COUNCIL MEETING. The Council held its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. There were present: —CrsC. Kebbell (chairman), H. O. Toogood, W. Harris, J. Morris, J. Colquhoun, and R. F. R. Beetham. An apology for absence 'was received from Cr A. Murray. Mr L. Donald wrote directing the Council's attention to the bad state of Nursery Road from Johnstone Street to the Ruamahanga River. The constant heavy>dray traffic on the road made it a veritable bog. Cr Morris stated that the road was in bad repair, but all the traffic on the road came from the Borough. He moved that the letter be forwarded to the Borough Council with a request that they pay half the cost of repairing the road. The motion was carried. Mr Geo. Manning, senior, wrote asking the Council who was responsible for clearing the willows from the middle of the Kopuaranga River fronting his property. He considered that unless the willows were removed from the middle and both sides of the stream, there was a danger to the road in the locality. The Engineer was instructed to visit the locality and report to the next meeting on the matter. Mr C. L. SpenceY wrote directing attention to the bad statenSx a culvert on Robert Street, Lansdowne. The culvert was dangerous to anyone driving at night, and was too small to take away the'storm water after heavy rain. The Engineer was instructed to attend to the matter. • The Secretary of the Masterton Golf Club wrote forwarding £1 14s, being the Club's contribution towards the cost of metalling the road leading to the Golf Links. The Club asked that the work of metalling the road should be proceeded with as soon as possible. It was decided to inform the Golf Club that it would not be advisable to metal the road at the present season of the year. Mr G. E. Jackson wrote asking permission to put a wire on the telephone line along the Te Ore Ore Road as far as the top of Bennett's Hill and then again on the road line through Lett's property to the Brancepeth Road. The Clerk reported that a copy of the regulations governing the erection of telephone -lines had been sent to Mr Jackson. On the motion of Cr Toogood it was decided to ask Mr T. Taylor to allow the Council permission to prospect for gravel on his property in the vicinity of Long Hill deviation. Cr Harris moved that the Engineer be instructed to fill in the holes and break the larger stones in Gordon Street, Lansdowne. The motion was carried. On the motion of Cr Morris, it was decided to pay half the cost of a road connecting Colombo Road with Cockburn Street in the County, provided the Borrjgh Council p # ay their half of the cost as already promised.
