NEW ZEALAND v. WELLINGTO PROVINCE. PROVINCIAL TEAM BEATEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 6. There were about six thousand spe< r tators at the match, to-day, betwee . the New Zealand team and the We lington Province. The latter playe 1 the "All-Blacks" before they lei i and beat them handsomely, but tc day's team was much inferior to the of 1905, and were opposed by eigh of the "All-Blacks." With a stron, wind against them they were hel£ less in the first.spell. Mynott, Fryei and Colman scored tries, from whic 1 Spencer kicked two goals. Nev Zealand 13, We'lington Province nil Fryer also crossed the line near th flag and attempted to run behind th posts, in doing which Wrigle; charged him and took the ball fror him. 1 In the second spell, with the win ■ again&t them, the blacks showe marked superiority, especia.'ly i: scrummaging and forward play. Keep ing the, ball on the ground, the; worked it up, then opened out, am Hunter, Mynott and the rest of th' backs got to work. In this wa; Fryer and Colman again scored, mak ing the total 19. For Wellington Evenson kicked a splendid goal fror a mark obtained at half-way and jus at the very close of the game, fron a stiff scrummage by the corne] flag, Rush got over and secured tht only try they obtained. The final score was thus — New Zealand 19 Wellington Province ... 6 . The New Zealand team that wai playing to-day seems rather light Of the new players Colman and Fryei are pretty sure to become prominen players. The latter has great speec and pluck. \ WAIRARAPA RUGBY UNION. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTERTON v. CARTERTON. ,„Xhe Masterton and Carterton Seniors met at Carterton on Saturday. 'Neither team had so far been defeated this season, and the prospect oi an' interesting match induced a large number of Masterton enthusiasts to visit Carterton and witness the game. Expectations were fully realised, and a fast and interesting game was witnessed. The teams were well matched, and neither line was crossed during the match. Although the ground was in good order, and the day an ideal one for football, not much back play was witnessed, the game being mostly confined to the forwards. Carterton had the advantage in this department. The teams were as follow:—Carterton — Full-back, E. McKenzie; three-quarters, Thompson, Crawley and Killop; five-eighth, C. Groube; half, Wadham; wings,' Hall and S. Mason; forwards, Cadwallader, Johnson, H. McKenzie, Bond, E. Mason, Henderson and F. Groube. Masterton —Full-back, M. O'Leary; three-quarters, Minett, J. O'Leary and Duggan; five-eighth, Kinzett; half, Holmes; wings, Gray and Daniell; forwards, Barry, Fielding, Lyall, Mackellar, C. Ross, A. Ross and Spackman. Masterton won the toss, and for the first ten minutes or so kept Carterton on the defensive, the hlack pack beating the home forwards both in the scrum and on the loose. Long kicks to touch by E. McKenzie, however, relieved the pressure. Each team were forced down. Then in the centre of the field Holmes sent the ball to Kinzett, who transferred to J. O'Leary. O'Leary sent it on to Minett. but the latter failed to take the ball. Give and take play in the forwards then ensued, Spackman and Henderson doing good work for their respective teams. Holmes, following up a kick well, collared E. McKenzie before he could get a kick in, and Masterton set up an attack on Carterton's line. Kinzett sent the ball to Lyall. who crossed the line, but the whistle had sounded for a pass forward. Then Minett obtained the ball from a pass, and dashed over the line, but was brought back for off-side play, and a free kick was awarded to Carterton. Thus two splendid opportunities were lost by over-eagerness on the, part of the visiting backs. Carterton cleared their line, and play was taken to midfield. J. O'Leary was playing splendidly for Masterton, his long kicks saving them time after time. Henderson did excellent work for Carterton, and Groube was a tower of strength on the Carterton backs. Just on the call of half-time Cadwallader and Henderson headed a Carterton rush to the Masterton line, but a penalty kick brought relief, and the whistle sounded with no score on either side. In the second spell the superior play of the Carterton forwards kept Masterton mostly on the defensive. In the scrum the Masterton pack were obtaining the ball on almost every occasion. Carterton set up an attack' on the visitors' line, but numerous free kicks enabled Masterton to repeatedly clear their line. A penalty against Gray for off-side play enabled E. McKenzie to kick a splendid goal from nearly half-way. Carterton continued to attack for some time, but M. O'Leary, who was playing a line game at full-back, invariably found the line with a well-judged kick. Masterton livened up, and Fielding headed a rush to Carterton's 25, but E. McKenzie found the line, and staved off the attack. Holmes, Kinzett, J. O'Leary and Duggan took part in a good passing rush, and O'Leary almost crossed the line, but a pass forward spoiled the chance. The whistle sounded with Masterton attacking, the scores being— Carterton 3 Masterton 0 Carterton undoubtedly had the best of the game, principally through good work by their forwards, and safe play by the backs. Henderson played a splendid game in the forwards, and was ably assisted by Cadwallader and H. McKenzie. Groube played in fine style in the backs. E. McKenzie's long kicks saved the forwards, and turned defence into attack time after time. Crawley,

Killop and Thompson also played well. Fielding, C. Ross, A. Ross, Mackellar and Barry were the pick of the visitors' forwards. J. O'Leary was the mainstay of the backs. He took the ball in fine style and kicked with judgment. Kinzett and Minett also showed up well. M. O'Leary played a good game at full-back, his line-kicking being splendid. Mr Quin, of Wellington, was referee. RED STAR v. GLADSTONE. The Red Star and Gladstone teams met on the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Gladstone had the strongest team that has yet represented the club, Te Aute College and St. Patrick's College players taking the field for them. Red Stars were without the services of Wrigley and Collett, and shortly after the start of the game Scorrar had to retire, having had his lip badly cut. He had to have three stitches put in the wound. The vacancies in the team were filled by P. Williams, J. Kingdon and W. Norman. The Stars, who did not appear to take the game very seriously, had the best of the first spell, and Du Blois scored a try, which was not converted. There was no further score. In the second spell Gladstone were on the defensive all through. The Stars were within the ace of on several occasions. But for the free and easy style the Stars took matters they would have probably put up a respectable score. Towards the end of the spell, Walker j scored a try which Chamberlain converted, and the game ended — Red Star 8 Gladstone ... ... 6 The Stars outclassed their opponents in all departments of the game. 1 The backs played well, and indulged I in a number of passing rushes. Todd was far and away the best forward on the ground, and he was ably assisted by Du Blois, Chambers, Corbett and Clarke. The Gladstone backs played a safe game, and did some good kicking. Stafford and Tori were prominent all through. The forwards were an even lot. Mr L. Williams was referee. The following are the positions of the senior teams competing under the auspices of the Wairarapa Rugby Union: —
