Received July 5, 11.17 p.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The Conference in reference t6 the coal lumpers' difficulty has been resumed. After some fencing regarding the question of working with certain non-union formen, the chairman of the Coal Lumpers' Union declared that if the conference proved abortive the responsibiliy would rest on the shoulders of the employers. The employers' reply to the men's demands, submitted on Wednesday, was then read. It stated that the Steam Colliers, Owners and Stevedores Association had decided that all foremen shall be appointed by and absolutely under the jurisdiction of employers and cease to be members of the Coal Lumpers Union; they declined to grant any increase for night overtime, but agreed to pay •2s 3d per hour for Saturday afternoons; they promised to restrict Sunday work, as much as possible, compatible with the carrying on of work at a port; they acceded to the request that no work should be done during meal hours, but declined to grant full rates for the time the men were'kept waiting, but if the men were ordered to a job which did not eventuate they were willing to give each disappointed man ss, and where ordered to a job which does not commence at the hour stated to pay the men an hourly wage until the work begins, or the men are sent home; they agreed to make eight yards the limit for two carriers instead of seven. The employers asked if these proposals were accepted ; that an agreement be drawn up asking the' Arbitration Court to vary the awards in accordance therewith. The conference adjourned to allow the Coal lumpers' delegates to consider the proposals. On reassembling the employers' spokesman., in reply to a question, said these were the employers' final proposals. The conference adjourned till Monday, and the delegates in,the meantime will place the employers' proposals before the Coal Lumpers' Union. TRADE WITH THE EAST. Received July 5, 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5/ Mr Carruthers, State Premier, says that the Government intends to call tenders for a better and more regular service with the Far East. Mr Carruthers states that the Premier of Queensland, Mr Kidston, is heartily working with him to subsidise the service.
