WORKERS' LAND SETTLEMENT LEAGUE.

A meeting of the Committee of the Masterton and District Workers' Land Settlement League was held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms la&t evening, Mr R. Rigg (President) occupying the chair. A general discussion took place on the Workers' Dwelling Act, the general opinion of the meeting being that the' Act as at present constituted was of little material advantage to the working man, and it was considered that amendments in the Act were necessary before it would benefit the workers of the colony. The President stated that as far as he could see they could do nothing at present in the matter of workers' homes, as they did not understand some of the clauses of the Act. He considered that the best thing to do would be to get an interpretation of the Act, and have it placed before a future meeting, when it could be discussed. Mr T. H. Smith proposed that Mr B. J. Dolan be asked to give a written definition of the Act as regards the different clauses, especially the clause in reference to a tenant insuring his life with the Government. Mr J. Mackay seconded the motion, which was carried.

Mr Mackay handed in to the meeting a petition requesting the Government to take over 10,147 acres of native lands in the vicinity of Masterton, and cut them up for closer settlement. The petition contained over one hundred signatures. Mr Mackay stated that he could obtain more signatures. Mr D. Threadwell moved, and Mr Smith seconded, that as soon as the list of signatures is complete the petition .should be handed to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., to bring before Parliament. The motion was carried. The price of coal also came up for discussion, but frothing definite was decided upon. It was decided that an official stamp be purchased for the League. On the motion of Mr Threadwell a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to iMr Mackay for his services to the League. It was decided to hold a general meeting of the League next Friday evening.
